Sisters Living Together
 

Hi everyone!
I have recently, one day ago, saved two sweet Syrian girls from a bad end and I have a question.
These two sisters were born at the beginning of 2012 and have happily lived together their whole lives. They are always sleeping and cuddling together and I have yet to see any signs of aggression. I have checked both of them over for signs of wounds or fighting and I don't see anything to indicate fights. The cage that they have been living in is far too small, so I bought them a more appropriate cage today and they seem very happy in it.
What are the chances that this will continue? Has anyone ever had two females live out their lives together?
I have had a number of Syrian's in the past and I know that they are solitary little creatures and can do serious damage if housed together. I have had up to three at one time but they were housed separately and were never allowed to come in contact with each other. I know that it is a big no-no to keep them together but the girls are getting along so well and I don't want to separate them unnecessarily.
What are the chances that I won't have to?

i personally would separate them hun even though you don't want to

they may be ok now but they could suddenly just turn on one another and do some serious damage.

I really would separate them. It's likely that, in the small cage etc, they got on together out of necessity, but once you start giving them more space and actual suitable accommodation I would expect them to start getting territorial over parts of it and start getting aggressive with each other. It's better in my opinion to just not chance it.

Like the others have said, they really need to be separated. It's amazing that they have come this far in the first place. It really would be best if they lived separate. We have two chinese females together which isn't recommended, but they do get on really well together and they are sisters like yours are. The thing is syrians ARE completely solitary, they need to be alone. It would be horrible for you to come home or something and they had attacked each other.

If you need any advice on getting suitable housing, bedding etc then this forum is definitely the best place to come.

Yeah... I'm afraid its a bit much of a risk to be worth taking.
If they fall out there's a real chance they'd have killed each other before you found out they'd even disagreed at all.

I have heard of syrians living together but its incredibly rare and really, really not a risk worth taking.

Hmm. Well I have read that female Syrians are more territorial then Males. They may not be fighting because they are still young. You never know, they could turn on each other any second.

I was at the vet, and one of the techs told us the story of his wife's classroom hamsters. She is a teacher, and they lived together for a long time, but one morning she came in and there was blood everywhere :( I wish the hams were dwarves and if so, I would say to go for it. You could probably keep their cages next to each other or make a bin cage with a divider in the middle so they can still see/smell each other but with no risk. Sorry I can't give you good news.....

I have seen some instances where same sex littermates will share a cage together with no problem, but then I also had a female who turned on her mother. The females are definitely more territorial and it isn't confined to just the inside of their cages, if Melvin comes within body length of Snickers cage she is climbing the walls to get at him. He made the mistake of climbing up the side of her cage and she bit him through the bars, he lost the very tip of one of his fingers. Thankfully it has grown back, and it was a painful lesson for him and I both.
As stated above, they might spend the rest of their lives in the same cage with not so much as a scuffle, and then again anything might set them off. I have seen both sides of the spectrum, and with that being said I guess the best advice I can give you is to be prepared to separate them if need be.

I had to seperate my lil sisters,they got fighting over everything! so now they each have their own house and come out to play together they are so cute but couldnt live in the same cage.
