Oh, my best food? I keep that in the toilet now.
Hi all. Fur-nando, as of yesterday, decided he would keep his very best food in his potty. I watched him do it and groaned. So tonight, I've had to throw away a Bonio, half a monkey nut, and a pumpkin seed (along with some unidentified mush ). Tonight when I've fed him, he's steamed straight off with his favourite stuff, dumped that in his potty, right on the bit he pees on, and then put the stuff he isn't so excited about in his nest.
I never tinker in his nest removing things (he eats fresh food when out, but doesn't pouch it, so it's useful for keeping his nest un-mouldy!) between cleaning days (every fortnight or so), so I don't think it's him wanting to scent mark it. I don't understand why he has suddenly decided this is a plan? He's almost a year and a half now. And seemingly, dumb as ever.
Perhaps it will change back when his new big sleeping house comes (any day now), but in the meantime, what do you think these sudden loony changes mean?

Re: Oh, my best food? I keep that in the toilet now.
My hamster, Mavi, does this all the time! At first, I was concearned about it too but was able to relax once I found out it was okay. Surprisingly, many hamsters do this and it doesn't spoil the food either. Their "waste" actually still holds some nutrients and hamsters have been known to actually EAT IT when their food needs aren't being met. :/ Anyway, their food should still be fine but I totally understand if you feel the need to throw out certain foods that seemed spoiled because of this habit.
Hope this helped!

I'd reckon it'd be to soften it. Maybe he's finding it easier to eatenwhen it's been mushed up a bit? I'd maybe just move them every time he puts them in that corner - if you canbe bothered. Like reverse potty training.... :/

Re: Oh, my best food? I keep that in the toilet now.
I heard on here from another similar case that they sometimes do this to mark the food as theirs. I wonder if maybe, you could rub your hand in his shavings and then use your hand to place his food down? That way if he's marking it as his, he might not feel the need to mark it with his pee. Alternatively, you could put it straight into his nest it would smell like him AND be in a place he considers his...?

This made me laugh. Maybe he's using the good stuff to attract a partner and spreading his aroma around it as a token.

Fur-nando you little tinker
Batman won't even use a potty, he can't even be bothered to store anything, he just eats straight from the bowl
