Squawking

So I adopted Colin the Campbell's from the Rspca on Saturday and so far he has appeared to settle in well. Tonight though, I heard a squawking noise from his nest - he stopped when I talked to him. He then came out and was very hyper and seemed to sort of quiver. He's made the squawking noise twice more tonight.

He doesn't seem ill - do you think he could be a bit scared? He really hasn't had much human interaction, so maybe he's feeling a bit worried about being in a new home

I'd just keep an eye on him. We've not heard squawking from ours but hams have a huge range of noises. We've had to get used to Scruff starting a squeaky noise when she cleans herself and its really difficult to get used to.

Am sorry I can't say more but I have no idea what it actually will be

It sounded like the noise I heard Mo make when I first brought her home - its like a panicky noise. He seemed fine this morning - sitting in his wheel rocking back and forth whilst stuffing his fat face. I think it might have either been a nightmare, or a bit of a panic....he's really not had the greatest start to his short life, so he's bound to be a bit worried by change. It was heartbreaking to hear though!

When I got my 2 newbie boys (rescue ones, not keepers) they squawked when I first went to take a look at them.
I think they were scared because they have obviously not been handled much/at all

It is a horrible noise.

Then later that first night one of them stuck his head out of his house, squawked, put his head back in and they haven't made a peep since.

It does sound like he's unsure of his new home. I found our Campbells to be far more vocal than Syrians. Juno always sounded like a clock when he slept. It was a rythmic squeak.

I must say he's got a bit of a temper on him too - shortly after squawking, he came bundling out of his house and started attacking his shrimp cookie. When it fell over, he threw a massive strop and starting attacking it and pouncing on it! The same when he happened on a bit of tissue....funny boy! Maybe he was having a tantrum in his nest

Has anyone notice campbells 'drumming' with their back legs? He appeared to do this once yesterday too...like gerbils do

My little Syrian has done this too - she made the noise the first day that we put her in her cage after bringing her home, she was making the noise when in her plastic tubing. At first we thought that she was stuck and flustered, but then later realised that it was because we were sat watching her and she wanted to be left alone. For the first two days she'd make that noise if I gently talked to her during the day when she was sleeping.

She's okay now. She made that noise this morning when I removed the top of her cage to clean droppings, but stopped as soon as I started talking to her - I'm guessing it was panic, then calmed down when she realised it was me.

OP, maybe it's just because he's new and unsure of his surroundings?

im having the exact same problem with my hamster grayham he just wont stop squawking when i hold him or get him out of his cage for a certain amount of time

I used to have a dark golden syrian who screeched when I handled him, I eventually got him to stop by only putting him back in his cage when he stopped screeching. He soon grew out of the habit.
