Hoarding?
I've been alone on trains a lot the last couple of days, and my mind wanders...
My female syrian, Becky, is always covering her food bowl in sawdust. Little mounds of it, so when you look at it your never sure if there's food in their. Do you think this is hoarding for lazy hamsters? Like she cant be bothered actually moving it to a hoard? Or could there be another reason?
I wish she would just answer when I speak to her!

Re: Hoarding?
I think this behavior is instinctual as they feel the need to hide any food to keep it from being stolen. Its what they would do in the wild I believe.

Re: Hoarding?
My Joe does this, what they are doing is making sure no one else finds there food bowl, so they cover them in shavings.
Some times Joe will bury it really deep so I have to go around searching for it!

Re: Hoarding?
I think thats probably it. Maybe just different tactics for different hamsters. Stan, my male syrian, will totally empty his food bowl, but leave it where it is.
They are mad!

Our hybrids bury the bits they don't want to eat lol. Or thats my best guess with Dusty and Scruff anyway... Its never the stuff they adore thats buried

Re: Hoarding?
My George does the same thing, I always wake up in the morning to find that his food is covered in bedding but he hoards it in his house as well, it is completely normal, nothing to worry about.
