According to Belle, my 10 week old Syrian hamster, this is how to stop bar chewing ... "Ask your mommies to buy you a new and much bigger wheel and some new toys - preferably made of wood or something chewable. Then you'll be so busy that you won't have time to chew the bars!"
Other ways are lemon juice or vinegar (i think it was that) rubbed onto the bars and I just ignore Effie as giving her attention casues her to do it more
Aaahh...so thats what my syrian milo has been tryin to tell me! he's 12 weeks and is a bar chewer. he has a wheel in his cage and some toys but maybe he does need a bigger one. I'm sure he thinks he's a monkey though. He loves to climb
