Default Do you hear your hamster chirping? Well, mine is!

I got a new winter white named Sneakers. He is very engertic and curious. The weird thing is that when I first pick him up he makes this chirping noise as he sniffs my hand and arm.

I'm not crazy! My fiance hears it too, when he first picks up Sneakers. Why is he making that noise? My last Winter Winter named made a peep nor do my other hammies. (It's kind of cute though)

Hi Quincygirl

Whilst most hamsters are very quiet little creatures, I have had the odd one who was vocal. Most will only squeak/shriek if they're frightened or in pain, and can sound quite alarming, maybe accompanied by a bite if your hand is the thing scaring them. But like I said some hamsters seem to chatter away happily normally. My old Mitz would come to the edge of her cage and make chirruping noises until she was got out, or at least got a treat for her efforts! She definitely seemed to use it to get attention. She snored sometimes too!

So it might just be Sneakers likes to chat sometimes - he's saying hello! Do make sure though that the noises aren't because he's scared or in pain.

One of my passed-on hamsters snored a couple times lol I was quite surprised I can't say I had ever heard a hamster make any noise until then. I haven't come across it since then either. My Roborovski Dwarf Hamsters would put up a real fuss when I'd try and scruff them..

I'm sure your hamster is just making the sound because he's just a little unsure of himself.

My campbells that I got today are very vocal. They chirp a lot when they were first introduced and the smaller of the 2 will make a chirp for no appaent reason sometimes.Never heard it out of my syrain Biscuits though.

I have quite a few vocal dwarves. They make tiny chittering sounds you can hear if the room is real quiet and a couple make the chirping you describe. I don't find it unusual and I feel very complimented when they do this. I think those who chirp are trusting enough to try to 'communicate' with us and let us in on thier 'secret' world and language.

My syrian and any other syrian I had as a child never made a sound. Unless it was their hissing when scared, but this was only once with a hamster I no longer have.

Default Talking hamsters

I have quite a few verbal hamsters, especially the Russian Dwarf species. Check this previous thread out: Talking Hamsters?
