Default Hi new hammy

Hi everyone,

Havn't been on for a long time but as some of you may know I have got two little girls (winter white hybrids) and a little boy (campbell) and now i have a new addition to the group.

I have a 8 wk old Syrian cutiest little thing pretty much escaped from the carrier that the guy brought him out to show me in and then chewed through the box on the way home.

As my dealings have been with dwarfs i had a couple of questions.

Is hyperactivity usual? he has been abit scared but on the whole a very bold hamster.

Also if they bite, how painful in comparison to other things is it? had my dwarf bite me in the early days but just want to know what

Also ive brought him a house as hes in a big cage but he seems to have worked out how to go in it but not that hes suppose to sleep in it, instead sleeping outside

Small Animal Sputnik House by Savic | Pets at Home

Also anyone know where i can get a silent spinner for a good price or similar?

Also what size to clarify? 8inch?

thanks for any advice

Hi there, welcome back and congrats on your newbie
Every ham is different but its not unusual for a young ham to be quite active.

dwarf bites and syrian bites are pretty much the same, like sharp needle stabbing you!

Ebay is the best place I found to get silent spinners, you could try equinecaninefeline althought their servic is a bit iffy.
Unfortunately the silent spinner doesn't come in 8" size and therefore isn't suitable for a full grown syrian. Wodent wheels and karlie wonderland wheels are good

When we got our new Syrian, we too were unexperienced. But with any hamster, not just a particular breed.

I made the mistake of trying to pick her up while she was still sleepy. She got me on the fleshy part under the index finger. It hurt. Won't lie. Took all I had to not fling the little critter and put it back down gently in it's cage. It bled pretty heavy for a few minutes and then stopped. I let it bleed out, just in case. I am a bit of a germaphobe. LOL Rinsed it well and put neosporin on it. It was okay and then it was sore for a few hours. Weird sore. By the next day it was just like nothing happened. I will not encourage her to bite me, but I won't be freaked out now that I know what it feels like.

The nibble I got the other day after giving her some cheese felt like a tickle. I guess she thought I still had some and I hadn't moved my hand out the way.

Ours was about 5-1/2 weeks old and not very active. But that is because she was pregnant. We just didn't know it because we thought she was a boy at the time. LOL She is more energetic now, even with taking care of 7 babies.

Do you have photos? I would love to see your new furbaby.
