What noises do hamsters make? (syrians)
 

Something I was wondering, being new to hammy's. What noises do they make, and what does each noise mean. I heard a sort of chattering, that I think was annoyance/agitation( I was moving his wheel) I also heard teeth chattering, but i dont know what that is. So yeah, i know they can make a squeeling horrible kind of noise if picked up when they don't want to be. I really am just intrigued as to the spectrum of noises so i have a better understanding of what Ginger is trying to tell me. :D

The chattering can be a sign of fear or that they are unsettled. Luna did it when we first got her once but not since.

She sometimes sqeaks, usually at her food or when she has hiccups.

Snickers makes a soft chirping sound when she is happy. :)

I know in Rabbits and Gerbils teeth chattering is happiness too but not sure for hammies. :confused:

I know mine are dwarves, but I used to hear a weird noise when I held mine up close to my ear, a bit like chattering..then I realised it was food rubbing together in their cheeks >.<

Peanut chatters his teeth when i brush him as he doesnt like sitting still on my lap and when he gets a sniff of Pickle.. he also squeaks when he's just woke up and is going to the bathroom.. I think this is frustration squeaks..

The girls make some delightful little noises, like a squeaky toy, when they are, erm, feeling fruity. Its really quite comical as one lets out a squeak and the other replies with a little hissing sound! The boys just sit there listening intently to what's going on and I'm sure they are just wishing they could get it on lol :mad:

Jesse dreams and kind of grunts in her sleep. She also chatters her teeth at me in annoyance when I stop her chewing the corner of her cage :rolleyes:

Buster our syrian has squeeked once (when I kinda accidently squished him a bit during an escape attempt :oops: ), and chattered at me once when I first held him up to my face. Guess I'm a bit scary. Other than that he's not made a noise except the pitter-patter of his feet and the nibbling of his food. Bit of a shame really, having to rely on his body language is a bit more difficult. Guess he's just a kinda laid back little guy. :rolleyes:

Sen madea sort of rasping/screaming noise when I was taking her home (but only after the car had stopped outside our block). It was like she had decided she'd had enough exploring of her travel cage and was shouting to get out - it mighta been the cold outside too, but she was def angry. Was fine once we got her inside and into her cage, she's never made that noise again.

She does chatter (not really at me just in general) quite a bit usually if stop her chewing on something or don't let her get her own way (this is usually not letting her out of her cage when she wants out).

hehe my newest Hamster Joey does this, she reminds me of a dogs toy when she makes the squeaking sound and the little hissing sound is werid!
It really winds my boy hamster bud up and i think she knows this as the more he bar chews to get to her the more she does it! the lil madam!

Mr Ham makes a kinda of hicup kind of sound when he wakes up to let me know hes awake and wants attention, he will also do this if he knocks his wheel over in the night and needs to wake me to go sort it for me!
