Female Syrian Dwarf invades!!
Hi, I have a male dwarf hamster who has been in his cage alone for a month or more. We decided to buy a female syrian so that he will have some companion and we actually plane to breed too.
I read a lot of info about introducing new hamsters and it said that when you introduce a hamster, it should be in the male's territory.
However, when we introduced the female dwarf in the male's territory, she acted like she owned the place and my male hamster didn't actually fight. Now, he is a bit thinner.
Why did this happen? What can I do?

Re: Female Syrian Dwarf invades!!
You bought a female SYRIAN and introduced her into a male DWARFS cage?
:/ that is really dangerous and should never stick them together let alone breed them, the Syrian will more than likely try kill the dwarfie,
do you mean a girl dwarf to go with him?

Re: Female Syrian Dwarf invades!!
If you bought a syrian, remove her from the cage as she will kill your dwarf... Also, pet shop hamsters shouldn't be bred as you know nothing about their background and could likely end up with deformed babies etc,
Also, please be careful with breeding, and read up a lot about it before hand...don't breed them just to give the male some company,
You should introduce 'company' in same sex pairs, for example, put a boy in with your boy, if you put a boy and a girl together, the girl will get pregnant over and over again, and this could lead to death.. she could also kill your boy while pregnant, as they can get moody..
If you meant 'siberian' when you said syrian, it's still not a great idea, if the boy is being bullied, separate them.
If it is syrian, I'd advise on not breeding hamsters until you've researched a bit more..sorry, I don't mean to sound mean, I'm just trying to look out for the hamsters

Yh forgot to add unless your petshop is good - well you'd need 2 good petshops or could be related - then don't breed

Re: Female Syrian Dwarf invades!!
I echo what everyone else says, but i wouldnt advise you too breed. Please dont take this the wrong way - but you seem far to uneducated about hamsters to breed, lots of people who have bred, or plan to breed on here have some so much research, please think about that
Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh..

Re: Female Syrian Dwarf invades!!
I dont think it is actually possible for these 2 diffrent species to mate. BUT they will try and kill. each other!
PLEASE, PLEASE keep these two hamsters seperate. They are from different parts of the world and would never come into contact with each other in the wild. They WILL kill or seriously injure each other. Syrian hamsters are solitary animals and MUST live alone. Matings with another syrian must be carried out under strictly supervised conditions. As even a syrian to syrian mating can go wrong.
Breeding hamster is a serious business and not to be taken lightly. There are many, many things that can go wrong such as desiease and deformities or even mum and all the babies dying. So PLEASE I urge you to use this site and others site on the web to do some reasearch before even thinking about doing this again. The very fact that you have tried to mate two different species shows that you have not done much research, so please do this before trying again. Your current hamsters health and wellbeing must ALWAYS come first. Please you MUST seperate these hamsters stright away and they must NOT come into contact ever again.
