Ooh good idea *tootles off to eBay*

The stuff I've got now I got from a shop the other side of the city - I very rarely go that way usually, theres about 6 pet shops nearer to my flat or on my way to university. So if I could find it online it'd be handier.

Default Sand

Well, as I've already posted here and there, Nibbles now has his very own sand bath using the packets of chinchilla bath sand mentioned above. Its been amusing to say the least! He wasted no time in checking it out and dug and scratched in it like crazy then half rolled around it in. (I'd still like to see him belly up with feet in the air!). I was hoping he'd continue to just use it as a bath but he now uses it as a potty and seems to have abandoned his proper potty in the other corner! Oh well, so I have to clean it up a bit more often. He's having fun obviously but I'll never understand why he has to take a nap in it!!! Weird. I saw him in the jar just last night right after he had been running on his wheel - of course the first time you see your hamster in a new "jar" just lying there motionless got me concerned so - head to the glass I looked for breathing. Yep, he was alive, taking a nap! All this running around in his new larger tank I think is tiring him out LOL! Poor baby! Well, one good thing came of this - I know where his nose touched the glass and his bottom ended, basicaly filling up the jar, so I measured it and he's about 61/2 inches long! He's almost 4 months old. I have got to weigh him again. He was 2oz when I got him at about 21/2 months old and half the size. He's grown a lot!

It's strange.. people told me you can "train" you hamster to use a potty with hamster litter or Chinchilla sand.. but everytime I've introduced it they take to it like a cat to a littler box.. as if it's natural...

I'm glad your hamsters like their sand bath!!

Default Potty / sand

I was thinking the same thing! I needn't have bothered training Nibbles to use his potty (although he picked it up quickly), I should have just used sand! However this is why recently I wanted to put a sand jar in the other free corner because although he used his potty, he still occasionaly liked to go to the other free corner and use that too! So, I figured thats where I was putting my sand bath. Now he seems to be using just that lol. Occasionaly he also uses his bed still, but other than taking out the soiled stuff he'll probably continue to do it. I'm not too bothered. They obviously like to do what they do, who am I to change it? I do like to remove soiled stuff though just so it doesn't smell and stays cleaner for him so he doesn't have to breath it in. Honestly, I've been tempted once before to fill a whole tank with sand LOL!

Default No training required!

No training normally required with any of my guys either - all species take to their sand potties/baths like they always had them, but then my mothers do have them in their cages throughout pregnancy and rearing so tend to show the babies how to use the potty...
