As soon as I get Biscuits his bin cage I plan on giving him a sand bath/potty. He dosen't have one now simiply because his crittertrail 2 dosen't have enough room. When I do start I will use childrens play sand until I can go to a pet store and get some chinchilla sand. By the way, I think that this is very good thread/debate Emma.

The pasta jars I meant are square sided - they're the posh Bertolli ones that are my favourites!!!

Do you use chinchilla sand or play sand Babyboos?

Default Chinchilla sand

I use Charlie Chinchilla Sand and SuperPet small animals litter balls currently. I spoke a bit about potties/sand baths recently in this Section - check it out here: Does your hamster drive you potty?

I personally think children's play sand is too gritty/large and coarse to really get into the coat of Long-haired hamsters, and my large container of Charlie Chinchilla Sand lasts for ages, definitely less than £1 per week - and I have a lot of hamsters, and baths to fill

Does anyone know a UK online pet shop that sells chinchilla sand? All I find everywhere in real-life shops and online is dust, dust, dust.

This one is actually from PETsMART. Below is a link to the page with Chinchilla sand. I don't know if it's good, but I just wanted to give one that may be of help.

Carefresh that's actually the very sand that I use for my sand baths and it seems great to me! it comes with 5x140 gram packets of sand. I find one packet is enought to fill up two large sand baths that I use for my gerbils and Syrian.

I usually buy it when I make a trip down to a PETsMART. This was lasting me a while until I ended up with two new gerbils and a Syrian hamster :P

If they use it as a potty you need to change it more.

Shipping from the US seems a bit excessive when I know there's at least one brand made in this country, I just can't find it stocked in any of the local shops!

Well maybe the stuff you already had is the same as Chinchilla sand as you were saying. If it's grittier but hasn’t caused you problems I don’t see why you should stop using it?

Maybe you can do a search on eBay... eBay is always a good place to look for stuff.
