So, my brother is a handy man and came up with an idea yesterday to keep my hammie cool. I also give him cucumbers and put an icepack in his tank but here is an idea: (look at this video!) Click on the image to see it!

You see, it's a fan blowing cool air from the ice through a PVC pipe into his tank. I will probably only use it on really hot days, because we have AC...but sometimes the AC doesn't cover it...so what do you think of the idea?

It is quite an ingenious set up. Unless it is really extremely hot I would not use a fan and not directly on the animal. I presume it does not blow too hard! Remember hammies are much smaller than us and consequently lose heat very quickly so be sure not to chill him. We find a chilled terracotta tile which they can choose to lie on or not is cooling. Most of the time they don't and are quite happy as long as they are in a shaded room with a fan in the room but not directly on them.

Yes, that`s what I do when it gets too hot. I have an oscilating floor fan which I stand away from the cages and tanks, but set it on low and it wafts air over the tops of the cages, much to the delight of the gerbils and mice! I only use this if the heat is unbearably hot.

when i went on hoilday last week, i took hammis to my nans and he was in a shaded room, i dont reconmend using a fan as they are loud and can if to close can damage a hammies hearing

I see, I try to keep it low and not too cold, I just want him to be comfortable, but I won't use it too much, because it can be a pain...

Modern desk and floor fans are whisper quiet and don`t make a noise! Fans should be used a good distance away from cages and tanks, but only allowed to skim air to stop hot, stagnant air from `pooling` and being clammy and sweaty. Many people say fans are no use to rodents as they don`t sweat as we do, therefor, it does them no good. I don`t agree with that. I have seen the benifit that having a fan has when the hot weather is unbareable and I`d rather use a fan than not.

I agree racinghamster. Most fans are very quiet or else we would not use them either. Just keeping the air moving in the room is cooling.
