Shelf in bin cage

My husband spent several hours today building our hamster, Evander, a bin cage. It looks great and is much roomier and convenient than the Crittertrail cage we've been using (Evander had just about given up on the S-curve to get to his exercise ball).

We also built a shelf that he can climb to through a tube. The shelf has a small edge, but Evander seems to enjoy jumping to the floor below. This is a six inch drop and I'm wondering if it's safe for him to jump. We have lots of litter below, but still. We can probably use part of the old cage to make a barred-in wall...

Any thoughts?

Oh it sounds fantastic - hope we get to see a picture of the finished article - That sounds a perfectly safe distance to fall/jump, especially if as you say there is a layer of litter beneath.
