Hi Everyone. I was wondering what percentage of protein a dwarf hamster needs? I will be feeding Harry Hamster mix soon and this is currently 19% protein. Is this enough, or should I be feeding anything additional?

On another note entirely, when a hamster gets to a certain age, is`nt too high a protein level bad for the kidneys? I know it can be for mice and rats, but being new to the hamster world, I`m not too sure. So is there any nutritional guidelines I should be following relating to protein levels and age?

I recommend Harry Hamster for my dwarf hamsters and at 19% it is high but not as high as my breeding mix at 23%. I certainly wouldn't have a hamster live on 23% longterm, but a minimum of 15% if what I always use as a guideline for all ages. Younger hamsters need a lot of protein and complex carbohydrates, older hamsters a good balanced diet with plenty of vitamins, minerals and "good oils", especially calcium for their joints and teeth.
