i decided to make a hammock for smudge here's the steps...... (sorry about the massive pictures!)

You Will Need
Material
Scissors
String
3 Safety Pins

First cut a triangle out of your material as big as you want
http://i803.photobucket.com/albums/yy316/Wofunny/Pets/005.jpg

Now make a hole in each corner
http://i803.photobucket.com/albums/yy316/Wofunny/Pets/006.jpg

Then cut three pieces of string the same length (as long as you want)

tie a length of string in each hole
http://i803.photobucket.com/albums/yy316/Wofunny/Pets/009.jpg
on the other end of the string tie on the safety clips

it should look like this
http://i803.photobucket.com/albums/yy316/Wofunny/Pets/012.jpg

Now clip the saftey pins on to your cage where ever you want like this...

Just be careful that he doesnt strat nibbling the fabric, this can get stuck in their digestive systems and cause blockages.

Ive made several hammocks - but they all fail. haha,

I agree with Hope. Personally, I wouldn't use anything fluffy in a hamster's cage.

Wow, I am just about to try and make it, will report back with results lol :)

You must be very careful with this fluffy fabric as if eaten it can be very dangerous and block up the bowel. Personally I wouldn't leave this in the cage and just use for closely supervised play.

Two words: EPIC FAIL (Btw thats me being rubbish at arts n crafts lol not an insult at you, I couldn't even cut out the triangle properly!)

If I get some string, I might have a go with some kitchen roll. Replaceable weekly paper hammocks, that are ok for chewing (until he totally wrecks em)! I still haven't had time to cook my sushi rice to make his super treat ball.

Quick effort with a bit of ribbon (so I can see easy if he chews it) and two sheets of kitchen roll folded in a triangle. Thanks for the inspiration! x

He was only on it for five minutes, he went back to bed, where he still is now, at 1:30am. Bah! I chopped him a bit of strawberry up for before I go to bed and everything!

I have exams, but after that, I am sure Chewy will get loads of shoddy home made treats!

I love that kitchen roll hammock, I need to try making one for Nibbles but I think she'd wreck it in not time, she gets kitchen roll for her bed :p

He weighs nothing. That and I used two sheets of kitchen roll, folded, so it's four sheets thick, really. And it's not even posh stuff, it will just be own brand recycled. Seems ok so far! No major damage, he's been playing in it today. x

i suppose its much safer than fleecey stuff :)
I will try it i think!
What can i use for the hammock arms (whatever you call em XD) string? or would i be better off digging out some ribbon?

Sammybingo
05-09-2010, 02:35 AM
Try either :). Ribbon seems good, the weight is slightly more spread out with it, but give string a go if it's handy. x

How about using a J-Cloth? like the bedding? that would be stronger than kitchen roll and would be ok if they had a little chew, you can get big packs in tesco for about 40p.

Forgot to mention that I attached eyelets in all four corners for the rope.
Luckily my mum happened to think of me and buy an eyelet tool!
Another idea would be to sew those metal rings found on keyring to each corner.

so what kind of materials would be ok for a hamster if it chewed them? Does anyone have like a list of fabrics or brands that are good to use?

wofunny

I don't think it particually matters just not really fluffy stuff I think! :)

Do you think this would work for mice as well? I don't really have a place for one in Jasper's cages, but I would like to give the mice a hammock of some sort.

Glad I found this thread. :)

Homemade hammocks are fine for mice, in fact from what i read mice are better with fleecey/material things than hamsters.

I just found 20 cent felt sheets at Wal-Mart. I bought one along with a pack of paperclips to link together for a chain. Do you think that will work? Jasper doesn't really chew things that aren't supposed to be chewed. lol.

Hope

As long as the felt and clips can hold the hams weight it should be fine (or hammy will get a bit of a shock suddenly crashing to the floor!) and just check that he is not nibbling at it.

Wow!
Guys, are you able to help me?
My Hammy is so spoilt by his mummy (me)
That I bought him a complex cage!
In the wired side, it's a triangle-shaped one with wire everywhere except from the bottom.
That's the only wired part in the whole of it, and I'm thinking the string would slip down and it wouldn't be a hammy hammock anymore. Any ideas?

Same question as Becca. I know cellulose products are supposed to be okay, which is why were are assuming J-Towels (rayon, cellulose-derived) would be okay, but the reason paper products (cellulose) are fine is because they can dissolve in pouches and digest, whereas natural fibers (fleece, wool, cotton, hemp) cause impacted pouches and digestive tract obstruction. But rayon is a bit different than a natural cellulose product like paper-towels, right? And are there any other fabrics out there that are cellulose-based and fluffy-ish? I really want to make a hammock for Magellan.

@Mangoandmimi, I suppose it depends on what it's made out of, but I would assume it's wool or fleece, and so, no, it wouldn't be safe. Pet stores just don't care about hammies, I think.

Megellan is ignoring the hammock at first before he checks it out. He's far too busy to be impressed by changes in his habitat on my schedule. :) I tried the paper towel method. I used eyelets but didn't have the tool so I used two pliers to carefully push the smaller one through, then bent back its prongs.

I'm posting to say that this was easy and Magellan seems to love it already, or at least be curious about it. Thanks for the great idea!
