I have a pregnant hammy and she is due today and about 12pm I got up and I checked on her and there was blood on her bedding and some on her fur but no babies should I be worried...?

It may just be the start of things. Best to leave her in peace to get on with things - but keep an eye from a distance! If you know the exact date of mating, they can go as long as the evening/night of day 17.

well today is day 17 and I put her in a quiet place and I think she is getting close - the last hour she has been breathing really heavily and when she came out for a drink her anus looked like it is starting to swell a little bit, and I gave her some milk and a bit of kiwi fruit...

Best just keep an eye, but don't disturb her or distract her now. Good luck!

Hi Allie mum will really appreciate nice snacks now. Try to give her something high in protein (tofu, plain boiled chicken, tuna, or scrambled egg yolk) and maybe a little porridge oats. If you can use kitten milk (low in lactose) or formula such as Lactol designed for animals, NOT cow's milk. Soya milk is okay too.

well I gave her some egg yolk and the other day I went to the vet and they gave me something that would be good for her, but she won't eat veggies but she loves kiwi. The babies are doing good so far and 5 of the babies are going too have dark eyes and one of them is going to have red... it's hard for me to check on her because of my dog - he sits next to her cage and if someone goes near it he starts to growl, but from a distance all are ok

It is best to leave new mums alone with their litters, they can get stressed out very easily and can cannibalise the litter if that happens. It might be a good idea to move the cage somewhere that the dog won't get near it, or keep the dog out of the room with the hamster cage. It's also best not to disturb the litter until they come out of the nest themselves. I know it's so tempting to peek at little pinkies but it may upset mum!

the dog left her alone after a little bit, but about 2:00am two of the babies died but the rest are doing fine and so is mommy... :(

It is very common for some of the pups to die soon after birth. Do not worry about it. The best thing now is to give the new mum lots of peace and quiet and good food. Plenty protein will help her feed the little ones well. Do not handle the pups as this can cause the mother to kill them. Congratulations on your new family. What is the mum called and what colour is she?

the mum's name is Evil and she is a medium Grey colour. Now it looks 3 of the babies are going to take after her....

Hey, great news that the babies are well. Hope you are starting to feed them now as they are at the weaning stage. Can't wait for the pics.

well they haven't really started eating on their own but when mum drops little pieces around the cage they will get out off their nest and get it. They are getting really big but they're just starting to walk and they haven't fully opened their eyes yet.....

They will be eating now. Sprinkle some finely chopped nuts, oatmeal, tiny bits of chicken or tofu near the nest and give them a nice porridge either baby food or oat porridge in a shallow dish like a jar lid. Look at the breeding section in the website for other ideas. They will need some green food finely chopped too but just a little at first.

they opened their eyes about one hour ago and they love nuts and carrots...and I have also given them the two types of treats that I get from Wal-mart

the babies are doing good but this weekend I have to separate them but the babies are really small and I don't know what will happen if I put the males in with daddy...

They should hopefully be okay. Maybe take dad out and put him in his ball for twenty minutes while the male babies settle in. Make sure they go in his bed and rub them in the bedding if need be.

Are they not syrian babies? If so you should never put them in with an adult male as he will kill them. Single sex group only and put them in a tub if you are desparate. Forgive me if they are not syrians but I thought you said they were.

they are dwarfs and I have been puting daddy in one of my hands and a male baby in the other and daddy has been trying to bite the baby....

That's a relief..thought they were Syrians! It can be hard to introduce the new baby males to an adult even if he is the dad, and particularly after he has not been in on the raising of the litter. Even experts sometimes struggle to match them up and if they are not females the male may not accept them. I would be very, very careful if he is trying to bite them. Try babyboos suggestion but if he attacks them it is probably best to keep them separately.

There may some slight scuffling to begin with you need to keep a very close eye on them and be ready to grab dad quickly should things get too aggressive - don't worry about being bitten, better that than lose or injure a baby.
