Hello, this is a new thread for my new hammy.

Spock came to live with me after my first hamster left me for the ultimate playground up there. I couldnt stand the emptiness in the room and the cage. I went to a recommended shop, since no breeders had any new WW available.

Spock was the last one from a group of three month old ww in the shop, and he hid himself, so they put new younger ww with him and he bit all the boys! They took him out (little ones survived, but they have scars) and put him in a separated cage on a top shelf, out of the view. I wouldnt even know he was there if the shop assistant didnt tell me the story and show me the hammie. He was a little fighter, he did not bite, and the younger hamsters were much more tamer than he was. BUT i really liked his color and he was big enough not to escape from the cage. I decided that i loved that he is such a fighter and that he should find a new home with me and his new Savic Cambridge cage. And i love the challenge of taming him fully. I am so happy he doesnt bite, its so...relaxing to trust him on that.

I finally managed to see his little tiny scent gland and decide he is a boy! So this is Spock:)

Thanks, well the people that know most the WW think he is either a sapphire or agouti pearl:). Who knows? Anyway i am happy to have a different color now:). Today he got one of those eatable tunnel things and some new stuff with vitamins, and a new wooden house (i threw out Sheldons because it smelled of him). It seems that the new bottle i bought is faulty (grrr) so i put the old one, washed, to be sure its working. He found it without problem. He is so cute!

So Spock comes out usually at noon to check whats new and grab some toilet paper for his house arrangements.

He is really cute, even when he gets scared he is so curious that he runs back to check whats going on. He let me pet him while he was eating, and he climbed on my sleeve on the run to freedom, but he backed away from my hand. Its obvious he is afraid of hands a little, and thats why i cant pick him up yet. Im going slowly on picking up, its third day after all. Im just giving him some treats and making him realize where the food comes from.

he is really gorgeous. love his colouring. what a cutie. i love when they stuff toilet paper into their pouches and carry it about. sometimes their pouches are too full and the paper sticks out of the mouth :-D

its really good that you can alreasy touch him while he is eating. he will lose his fear of hands pretty soon

Yes, and now he transfered to his wooden house, at least he has a choice, he comes out during the day to get all the toilet paper and stuff it...:D

So tonight he stood on my hand when i fed him, it was great! I think he is only scared of being picked up. I took him to the bathtub today and we had a great time. He started climbing all over me and over my hands. When i tried to pick him up with hands he started jumping away, so thats something i can work on in the bathtub, hehe... BTW the bathtub tip is the best one!

Yay that's good! The picking up bit generally is the worst part. After a while hopefully he'll learn to just walk onto your hand so you don't have too.

yeah...same with my hammies. they never were scared of hands coz they never had a bad experience. but they are scared when you try to pick them up...probably an instinct in them. but yay...you are making good progress

I think he is scared because they picked him up in the pet shop without any love or attention. He probably wasnt handled enough. So today was really a progress! The bathtub saga continues: he climbed on my shoulders and then on my head! I was scared he would jump off, but he went back on my neck or climbed on my hands that i offered to him. It was adrenaline for both of us i think!
Also he went a little into the hamster ball. I think he has better sight than Sheldon had, because he was moving in it way better! Ill see how much he will use it.
I picked him up mainly from beneath, with my hands cupped, and i did the "tunnel" with my hands with him a few times for a minute or so. Now only to repeat and repeat until he gets the point:D. Now he is in his favorite corner cleaning himself ... no, wait, he is sleeping. He is such a character, sleeping out of his house already:D.

So Spock is now a little bigger, finally growing up. In the middle of month ill get a scale to be able to measure him regularly and monitor any weight gain or loss. Im a little panicky about that after Sheldon lost so much weight and i still wasnt sure even when my eyes told me its true.
Anyway, today was a special occasion, he peed on me. I think it was a late revenge for me trying to cut his nails earlier this day. They are long and moon shaped, but he doesnt want to stay still in hand. No way. No way even when distracting him with food, it simply doesnt work.
I decided to monitor his feet and to take him to the vet to try to cut his nails if anything seems wrong with them. Otherwise i will just leave him alone. He doesnt seem to mind. Maybe in a month when the weather gets really good enough i can take him anyway for a check up, i dont want to stress him now when he is not yet fully tamed and the weather is rainy. Nails will just have to wait.

I used to panic a lot about nails with Sheldon but then i saw a few hamsters of a breeder here and i realized i was exaggerating, they can have a little long nails without problem. Its just me:D.

Anyway Spock is not so scared of being picked up anymore! I usually manage to do it without him chasing around like crazy. He even stays still for two seconds before trying to squirm his way out. Handling him in a bathtub is the best idea ever. He loves exploring and he cant get away... or fall... i love it:). We do it almost every day:).

Awww he seems to have mellowed with you now :)
For his nails you could put a block of wood with some sand paper on.
Or even rocks to walk over will file them a tad

Aaargh he is getting darker every day (night haha)! I wonder when it stops. He denied yogurt today, but finally he started eating his hanging treat, i was already grieving for the money lost, its some Vitakrat Emotion stuff and it wasnt cheap, but hey, everything for my boy!

So... i wanted to let him take a walk on my bed. He was all innocent, not jumping anywhere, just running around and exploring for half a minute. Then he stood on the edge and stood there calmly for a few seconds, so i thought he wont jump. Then he ALL OF A SUDDEN jumped, and slided over the bed down on the ground! Like a spider-hamster! Totally waited for me to relax and then... JUMP!
So. No bed time for him. Looks like he is so curious about the world that the only time out will be in the bathtub. Oh well.

The latest news: i have a Wodent Wheel junior for him! I still cant believe! Its perfect! So silent...and so big...my hamster loves it, he showed much interest in it and after some running fell asleep in the wheel. So cute! I am so grateful because it was a gift, and it is really hard to get it where i live.
My hamster is really happy now:).

Yesterday was a great moment for me! Spock was lying in the cage, letting me stroke him behind the ears! Just like that! No begging for food and running around...next step - lying still on my lap!
I was so happy. He is so cute, i want to kiss him all the time. He has the greatest and cutest eyes and ears...

Thank you! He is now tamed and really nice, well-behaved. He likes to explore and i have to watch out for sudden jumps for freedom, so i use the bathtub for walks (and a tiny little bit of my bed). He loves to eat. He is so crazy about food...but all hamsters are!:D

A little update, here is a video of Spock from the hamster show in Prague. He didnt win anything this time, unfortunately his 1 year and 3 months are showing a little bit and he also gained a few... grams:) He is still super cute and healthy, and still has his cute huge eyes...

Hello! Just to say that Spock is well, he has a little thingy on his eye, but we are curing it with antibiotic eye drops. Otherwise he is really chubby and patient when he gets his drops (because he knows he will get a small treat after, haha). We are moving to a new apartment now so I feel like I a slightly neglecting him, but at least his cage is clean and he is getting his meds... more cuddles coming soon!
