View Full Version : Cabinet cage!

04-18-2010, 08:26 AM
So Thanks to the inspiration of micks cages i decided to have a go myself:mrgreen:

So i won a huge bargain on Ebay - 2.75 for a wall cabinet, tv cabinet and a table thrown in too!

We picked it up today and heres some pics:
The wall cabinet

Other pics of a closer view aorund the Different Parts:

The tv cabinet:

The wall cabinet is narrower then i thought but would still make a decent cage with all for top parts connected.
Then the bottom half will just be storage for now but possibly another cage in future.

Then the tv cabinet is a really nice space, but converting the drawer part would create a huge space :)

can't wait to get started now!

04-24-2010, 11:27 AM
So me and my grandad finally got started this afternoon. And we've managed to complete the tv cabinet!
I was going to move porridge into it since he began to bar chew. But hes since stopped and hes not going to gain any space by moving into one. Plus he loves to climb on his bars :D
So maybe i'll be able to persuade my mum to let me have a new ham or two?
A single chinese or a pair of russians maybe?

anyways heres some pics:
the whole thing, with drawers left for storage.

two holes cut out and meshed for ventelation at the back

Top floor, plastic coated wood used for the trays with a hole cut for ramp between floors.

bottom floor

I'm going to order one of these for the ramp: Rat Toys : Trixie Hamster Ladder Natural Wood 18 Rungs 7x27cm : www.EquineCanineFeline.com the place to buy all your Pet Products, Horse Products and Pet Supplies online (http://www.equinecaninefeline.com/catalog/trixie-hamster-ladder-natural-wood-18-rungs-7x27cm.html)
and possibly attach hinges to hook the ramp on.

Its such a great space, measuring 37 x 55 cm on both floors.

I'm so proud and thankful to my kind grandad, with all his D.I.Y skills.

04-24-2010, 11:36 AM
Wow that looks soo cool I'm sur whoever you put in will love it :D x

04-24-2010, 01:16 PM
That's a great cage, lucky ham that gets to live there. :)

04-24-2010, 01:18 PM
I'll have to take a pet shop visit and find the cutest ham ever!
Them plant my feet in the ground and refuse to move
It might just work.

04-25-2010, 01:44 AM
Looking great Mel! :-) Thats going to make a little ham very happy indeed!

Well, you cant have that super cage and nothing to put in it now can you?I think a trip to a pet store is in order! ;-)

04-25-2010, 01:48 AM
indeed! Got to get the ramp sorted first though :)

Oh and the doors aren't as heavy as i first thought, so they could be pushed open, any ideas how to solve this?

04-25-2010, 01:52 AM
Yep! Magnets like you get on some cupboard doors. you fix one bit to the inside and the other to the inside of the door and it holds it shut. Sorry, do yuo know what I'm on about!? thats a rubbish explaination!

04-25-2010, 01:56 AM
i get it :) Thanks hope i will try that!

04-25-2010, 05:06 AM
Your hamsters are going to love that. Im pleased I was such an inspiration to you. Keep us updated with the progress of their new home.

04-25-2010, 05:12 AM
Forgot to mention Mel that at the front of the cabinet you will have to attach a wooden strip along the length of the opening between the doors otherwise when you open the doors, wood shavings and bedding will fall out. Its a mistake I made until I fitted a 1 inch high strip of wood. It just needs cutting to the exact width of the opening and wedging in place. All you need to do when cleaning the cabinet out is remove the wooden strip and brush everything out into a bin bag. If you need any advice at all, just let me know.

04-25-2010, 05:16 AM
ahhh yes good idea i didn't think about that!
Will work on that next time me and my grandad get to work.

Thanks, if i think of anything i will be sure to ask :D

04-25-2010, 05:26 AM
It was something that I forgot to do aswell and everytime I opened the doors, my missus had to get Henry (Hoover) out so I had to come up with a solution. The strip of wood is only a couple of quid from B&Q vand will be sufficient to do all your shelves.

04-25-2010, 05:28 AM
do you have trays or just the shelf with a strip of wood?

I don't have to worry about getting wood, we have so much spare wood around!

04-25-2010, 10:19 AM
Its just the shelf with a strip of wood wedged on the front. Trust me its far easier to clean that way. If you have rotastak tubes and end caps for water bottles, put them inside the cabinet aswell. I find the rotastak water bottles to be much better than the ferplast ones with the suction cups.

04-25-2010, 10:41 AM
well i've made a pull out tray that should hopefully contain most the bedding. If not i'll add the strip of wood.
I don't have any of my rotastak stuff anymore, all sold and gone :(
But i can attach normal water bottles to the back mesh as i've left a gap for my hand to get round.

I did have a ferplast sippy but the suction cups got destroyed XD It was a pain anyway!

04-25-2010, 11:26 AM
Non of my hamsters seem to get on with the ferplast sippy. If you have space for another Robo, two of Tammys White Faced have just had another litter each. They really are premium quality hamsters.

04-25-2010, 11:30 AM
He is temping you FM . . . .

04-25-2010, 01:38 PM
I know! Ahhhhhh:???:
I want some sooooo badly :(

Do you mean the robos you got from her that had accidental litters? Or tammy has had another litter recently?

My mum is getting a mega begging!

04-25-2010, 08:45 PM
Tammys own Robos had new litters last week. They are doing really well also :-)

04-25-2010, 11:43 PM
Eeeeeek they must be so cute! XD

04-26-2010, 12:45 AM
Oooooooh Tammys robos - how cute would they be FM?! And you have a home all ready for them any everything, silly to keep that lovely cabinet cage all empty after all you and your grandads hard work . . .

GO ON!!! Get the little robos - you know you want to . . . . :-)

04-26-2010, 08:49 AM
STOP IT XD I'm going crazy at the thought!
I'm going to have a big hunt for loads of adorable baby robo photos to show my mum now :D

04-26-2010, 09:08 AM
That looks great FM.....ah Robos. I was in town earlier and saw the cutest little robo with fat cheeks.....shame I'm on a flying visit to the parents today.

04-26-2010, 09:12 AM
i just showed my mum the pics on micks thread ' last years litter' and she thought they were cute and funny!
Plus when i said that there was a breeder in kingswinford, Tammy (very close to me) SHE DIDN'T SAY NO!!!!

I gave her the puppy dog eyes and said about the cabinet cage, and all she replied was, it needs the finishing touches first.

That being the ladder between levels, the tray re sizing cause its too big (typical) and the magnets on the doors.
So its not impossible after all...i'm already thinking of names and stuff LOL

I'll get working on finishing it then ask her again, then contact tammy if she says yes.

04-26-2010, 10:28 AM
Yay!!! Way to go FM!!

04-26-2010, 10:28 AM
Woohoo, thats good FM :)

05-02-2010, 01:21 PM
right so got to work with my grandad again today, bless him hes loving it more than me :D
So i've yet to sort the doors out but re sized the tray and heres the ramp:
at the top:

Not completely sure how well a robo can get up it, but i will get peggy to test it for me :)

05-02-2010, 02:53 PM
That looks great :), can't wait to see it finished.

05-02-2010, 03:24 PM
Thanks, tryed peggy in it and she managed the ramp after a couple of scardey cat attempts :)
She made the space look good running round like a lunatic too!

05-02-2010, 03:25 PM
Awww bless her!!!

Make sure she knows that she is just the guinea pig and its not her new home! :-)

05-02-2010, 04:15 PM
I can't wait to see your cabinet cage when it's all ready! I'm superbly jealous.

05-02-2010, 06:52 PM
aw, your grand dad is so nice
i like the ventilation and the ramp :)

i can't wait too see cabinet cage once it's finished. your hamsters are so lucky !

oh and i can't believe you got all that stuff for 2.75 !

05-03-2010, 04:46 AM
i know hes the best :D

And yh it was a bargain, the woman was desperate to get rid of it!

I can't wait either XD

05-16-2010, 04:32 AM
bless my grandad, hes been working hard thinking of ideas! Now hes the one suggesting more renovations and asking me if i have anything else i want to make

he brought round the latch for the doors today and i'll post some pics of it later.
I think now its completely finished my mum will be getting a severe begging at the pet shop :D

05-16-2010, 05:10 AM
my mum will be getting a severe begging at the pet shop :D

Don't you mean rescue centre first? ;) x

05-16-2010, 05:15 AM
that will come after she gives in :)
Once we move house (in the next few months hopefully) my bedroom will be downsizing :(
But don't get me wrong, the whole of it is going to be devouted to hammies :D
if she thinks a samller space will stop me, she is very wrong.
