A few days ago I woke up and found my ham ham Botan dead in the door way of my bedroom which means my cat must of got her some how even though I though she had now way of getting close to the cage. I now have got a new ham ham Celica and now I shall keep her I'm my bedroom and keep the cat out unless I'm in there. Its sadly not the same and might take longer to tame Celica since she's is a lot more skittish than Botan. I'm also not sure if I posted this in the right form.

I'm so sorry for your loss :( Botan sounds like she was a sweet little ham. Accidents happen, and even though they're terrible, all we can do is try and learn from them. Play well at the bridge little one xxx

I’m so sorry that you lost Botan. But, you are doing the right thing to keep your cat shut out of Ceclia’s room as unfortunately accidents such as this happen all too often. I’d recommend not letting the cat in, even when you are there, are the smell of cat cat ve stressful to hamsters and your cat will feel frustrated by being unable to get at a prey animal. I always keep the door to my hamster room shut so my cats cannot get inside. I hope that Ceclia goes some way to filling the void and making you feel better.

Sorry that you lost your hammy. I agree to not let the cat in the room at all. Do you have a lid on your cage? Congrats on Cecilia, hope you are able to tame the skittishness (if that's a word?) out of her, dont get discouraged trying to tame her. Best wishes xx

Sukirutski, I am so terribly sorry for your tragic loss of Botan. She seemed like a sweet hammy. I do agree that it will be the very best for both Celica and your cat if you never let the cat have access into the room where Celica is housed or played with. It would be just too stressful and frustrating for both of them otherwise. I would also be sure to secure Celica's home from any potential escapes just in case she happens to slip out of the room and into a cat room. Unfortunately, terrible accidents occur when we least expect so I would just learn from this tragedy and ensure it never happens again. Hugs to you, Sukirutski, during this difficult time of loss and please forgive yourself because it was an accidental encounter that you will hopefully remedy now that you are aware of the potential dangers. My thoughts and well-wishes go out to you. Enjoy Celica to the fullest and remember that each hammy has their own special timetable concerning when each step of the taming process should proceed so try your very best not to compare Celica with Botan. Rest in peace, Botan. May you run free and happy at the Wheel in the Sky. Hugs to you, Sukirutski, and I truly hope that Celica will aid in healing your broken heart. We are all here for you.

Thank you all and sadly I can't keep them in a separate room because I live in a one bedroom apartment and Celica is in my bedroom and If I close my bedroom door its gonna hot in there. So I'll just have to keep a close eye on mama kitty and close her out when I'm not home or asleep if I'm asleep.

I'm so sorry about Botan, cats will always find a way. I really do think you should keep the door closed at all times, your cat will try his luck again.
It only takes seconds for you to get distracted and that's all your cat needs.
They will always hunt even if it's another pet.

I have to agree with Thin Lizzy. It really would be better to keep the door of your bedroom shut. You can have the windows open and invest in a fan or air con to keep the room cool if necessary.

Sorry to hear about Botan. Hope Celia settles in well. A secure lid and keeping the cat out of the room should stop any hunting success.

Oh Sukirutski I am so sorry you lost your little Botan. I'm sure you loved him very much and it's a shame that he had to go so soon.

I have to agree with the others about keeping the kitty away from Celica. Even if we think our hams are safe from our feline pets we can never be sure unless the two animals are kept in separate rooms. Cats are very clever and can jump very high and far, and even if they are declawed they can still use their teeth to open cage lids if they are not locked. I used to let my cat in my room when my two hamsters lived together in a glass tank with a locking lid (this was before I knew that cats and hamsters should not be in the same room). Once I separated my pair one of them was moved to a bin cage on my floor. Even though it has a lid I am not certain that the plastic would hold up against a very determined cat. And also, Tangerine (the one who lives in the bin cage) is a very skittish hamster and he was terrified to see a predator towering over him. Jasmine (my cat) was very determined to get to Tangerine and it was stressful for her to see prey right in front of her face but she couldn't get to it. And it was very stressful for Tangerine because he could smell a predator. So I made a thread about this issue on here and everyone said it would be better for me to keep Jasmine out of my room for the health and well being of both her and my two hamsters. I keep my bedroom door shut at all times except whenever I'm in my room. Occasionally Jasmine will try to mosey her way in but I'm always quick to take her out of my room.

If the other room of your apartment is hot maybe you could invest in a fan to keep the room cooler.

Sadly fans to me are useless cuz they never kept my room cool and another reason I can't leave mama kitty out is she will scream at me and put her paw under the door until I let her in which is a huge problem and why I'm putting claw caps on her when my next check comes cuz I can't have her tearing up my carpet like at my grandparents and If I have to I have a squirt bottle and I see her looking at either of the cages I can squirt her. Though I do close my room when I'm not home and she does not go in my room unless I'm in there cuz she fallows me everywhere and if she can't see me she will scream for example if I'm in the shower.

flowecrfairy they are caps you glue onto cats already existing claws its far more human than declawing a cat

Ah. It does sound better than declawing!
