Hello! I'm in the process of making a hamster cage out of an 8-cube threshold organizer. I'm going to be closing off the back with two sheets of wood. The front I'm going to make two large doors that cover the entire front of the unit. They will open from the middle outward, much like kitchen cupboards. I will also be cutting square or rectangular openings on the main doors to make smaller screen/wire doors. This way I can open each smaller door to spot clean and play with my hammy, but all the fluff won't fall out. Then for main cleanings I can open the two large doors to expose the entire inside. My problem is figuring out what wood to use for the back panel and the front doors. I've considered mdf board, melamine, and plywood. I would like it to be as light weight as possible for the front since they will be doors and I don't want to put too much strain on the hinges. The back panel I'm not sure if the heaviness matters. But I would like to keep the front and back wood between 1/4-1/2 inch in thickness. I know plywood isn't good for my hamster, however I'm wondering if I covering it in contact paper would make it safe enough. Also is 1/4 inch spacing appropriate for the wire on the door?
