I recently bought a new cage (hamster heaven) for my syrian, Hammibal. I had a gabber rex for him before this but I felt he needed more space to run around in because he was so hyper! At first he was fine in it, running around like a crazy thing, climbing the bars etc, but now I barely see him :( he sleeps in the little house thing at the top and he doesn't come out very often, whereas before he was awake and moving a lot.
Do you think there's any reason for this? He hasn't settled in properly? He doesn't like his cage? Or is it something simple like he doesn't like waking up when it's cold?

Any help would be great!

There could be a few explanations melon.
He may just be getting older and sleeping longer. Maybe he is out and about all night? try putting food all over and see if it vanishes overnight.
He may take longer to settle in the new cage and get things to his liking.
I have seen this happen in some hamsters who have been in tank type cages and have been moved to barred and vice versa. The hamster does not feel secure in the more open cage and can become more reclusive. It is quite stressful moving cage for them. Moving the other way, some don't like to be enclosed! We try and keep cage changes to a minimum these days to reduce stress.
They are ungrateful eh! Spending all that money on a hamster heaven and he does not appreciate it
I guess you need to decide if you feel he is stressed and want to move him back to the Gabber. A Rex is a fine size for a syrian, even an active one. If he prefers the rex then you will need to get a new hamster for the heaven  :D

Very ungrateful! Tsk! Thanks souffle, I'll try the food thing and see how he goes really. If he's no better within the next week or so then I'll move him back into the Gabber. But then you're absoultely right... I'll have to get a new hamster! That's a shame hey!

I love the name Hammibal - that's fantastic!
You could try giving him some extra treats, then he may relate to his new house being a new better life, like he should do!
Hope he's running about soon.
