48" X 29" X 21" DIY hamster cage with LED lighting

Here are some pictures of my new hamster cage for my Roborovski. It's 48"x29"X 21" and contains a 10 gallon sand pit / playground, 5 gallon dig pit and lower level den combo tank, an attached habitrail ovo mini on top, and LED lighting. If you're interested in how I built it I'll be glad to explain. I based it off of a tank I saw on youtube made by hopping hammy. My Robo loves it!:rolleyes:

Great set up but the vertical tubes will be almost impossible for a robo (or any hamster) to use? I`m talking about the one you have running up to the roof? Robos have spindly little fast back legs and although they do love a tube to run up, I would make sure they are at a lower, safer angle. Otherwise, well done. :)

Hi racinghamster, thanks for the advice. My Robo doesn't seem to have a problem with any of the tubes at present, but I'll keep an eye on him next time he climbs up the vertical one to make sure it's not stressing him. They are designed for Dwarf hamsters and are really small diameter with nice little knobs on the inside for their feet to grip. He did have an issue climbing the bendy logs I had in the tank at first, so I added the tubes and now I've built a set of steps to help him up into the 5 gallon tank.

He's my first Robo and quite a hoot to watch. He's finally starting to warm up to me as well and will sit in my hand and eat.

Robos are great little hamsters because they just love scooting about being busy! Crittertrail tubes (the ones with the bubbly appearance) are the best tubes if putting them at an angle, but they still need to be like a soft ramp to the hamster and not straight `up and down`if you know what I mean? Your tank in itself is fab without having the very top level there. Robos are fine having just a low shelf and a tube to run up and get back down again. Falls from height can be dangerous as robos are not climbers naturally so it`s better to remove any high levels or vertical tubes now and just keep the lower ones he will be happier using. x

Thanks again for the information. I think I like the look of the wooden steps I made him as well. I'll probably just do away with the tube when I get more time to build another set or I'll just do gradual levels to get him up to the first tank then use my steps to get him down into the second tank. His favorite thing by far is the wheel. He spends 80% of his time running on it, lol. Well, that and eatting and sleeping. I'll post more pictures as I dial in the tank for my little Robo.

He sure is a spoiled robo! Yes, they do tend to prefer digging and wheel running to anything else. It`s fine to have accessories and a few tubes for him to enjoy, just make them a little more robo-friendly because he won`t always be young and speedy! x

Switched pip's cage over to all habitrail ovo mini tubes and put them at an angle. He loves the mini tubes. Hope the picture link url works.
