Unfortunately had to make the decision to have Dottie put to sleep this evening.

Late last night, she was not herself. Unfortunately, she had a prolapse. This was a first for me as I have never had a hamster with one.

Dottie was unwanted after her previous owner got more ferrets and had no time for Dottie. So, 18th of January, she arrived, 10 months old and already had two previous owners.

Although she was not the best to handle, and preferred to explore, I felt a bond with her. She was an amazing hamster, every time I went into the hamster room she would perk up and leave her nest to see me and any treats I may have.

It was harder letting her go as there was a replacement vet there, and I could tell she has little to know hamster experience, and I didn't even get to say a proper goodbye to Dottie before she was taken into a different room.

To say that I am devastated doesn't cover it. It's always hard to let a hamster go, but helping her over rainbow bridge was the best decision, so I am at peace knowing that she is.

Here are some pictures of my lovely Dottie, some of her best I think, they bring out her personality.

Goodbye sweet Dottie. What a beautiful girl, such wonderful pictures. So sorry you had to make that decision & the circumstances in which you parted.
She knew she was loved & you did the right thing.

I don't mean to be insensitive but I've not heard of a prolapse, what is it & what can I look out for?

I'm so very sorry to hear this SinNyx, she had the best love & care with you & I know how attached you were to your lovely little girl so I can imagine how hard this must have been, even when it's the only choice & we know they are no longer suffering it's still so devastating. I really feel for you.
Run free & play well at the bridge little Dottie.

Sometimes life really isn't fair, poor Dottie had such a bad start to hers but she eventually found love and kindness in your care SinNyx. I'm sure if she could she would thank you for ending her pain. She has found peace.
Play well at the bridge beautiful Dottie x

So sorry for your loss. Those are wonderful photos and show how much she wanted to trust-yet, and pardon me for saying so, there is a sadness in her eyes too. I can see how you would have a strong bond with such a special hammie. Thank you for giving her the love she deserved, and the peace. RIP Dottie. Play well at the bridge. xx

Thank you for the kind words everyone. If this had happened when she was with her previous owner, I can't imagine what would have been done.

She was buried in a lovely little part of the rockery, in the garden, joining the other hammies I have had go over rainbow bridge.

I had to clean out her cage yesterday, and it's not in the garage. No doubt it will be home to another rescue at some point, but for now I prefer it being there.

@Coldpaws A prolapse is where the rectum is visible. In Dottie's case, I have no idea how it happened so quickly, but the vet said it was best to have her PTS, but in less severe cases it can be fixed, though as far as I know it can keep coming out.
