Castanea was born here on the 14th of March this year, her Mum (and Dad no doubt) came from a person who was mistreating them, we brought them home and hoped we wouldn't find too many pregnant girls. Only one girl was pregnant and she had seven pups, all seven stayed, the males were neutered and all eventually moved to live with the rest of their family and two unrelated females in a huge cage with loads to do.
Castanea was one of the two most nervous of the pups born here, she was perfectly fine being handled but never a fan of being picked up. She may not have been a huge fan of us but she was always really good with the other mice, one of the ones we could almost always rely on to not be involved if we heard the squeaks of silly behaviour.
Unfortunately her group have been battling a chronic infection over the past few weeks and despite medication Castanea became seriously ill. For the last four hours of her life she was snuggled with us and syringe fed water reguarly but unfortunately in the end the infection won out and our little lady died in my hands on Thursday evening.
This pic was (left to right) Castanea and her brothers Arecales and Rauta at 17 days old

This pic was the day Castanea and the other females met the neutered males to form a big group of 20 (Castanea can be seen stretched out at the back)

And last but by no means least, here're some pics I got of the whole "family" (Mum, Nanny and pups) the day the boys were split off into their own cage

Rest in peace Castanea, a little lady taken far too soon
