Does anyone know how big their bin cages are in litres? I'm going to buy a new storage box next week but all the measurements are in litres, there's a one that's 60L and it's longer rather than deeper, the 80L one is deeper rather than longer. I'm just trying to work out how much it'll cost me so I know how much I can spend at P@H tomorrow but I'm not sure how many litres the bin cage should be

Not a clue. Why can't you just measure it? Then you will know if it meets the minimum requirements. Also if you're getting a long but not deep one then be prepared to make a lid for it, otherwise your hamster will escape- like my one did.

Yeah I may have to visit the store, I'm just looking on the websites but they're all litres. Ideally I want to get the biggest possible, but if the 80L and 60L are the same length then the depth doesn't matter as much because obviously it needs to be longer not deeper. And yeah I'll be making a lid for it :)

This is the biggest I've found that seems to be longer rather than deeper, it's 79.9cmX39.8cmX25.5cm, what does everyone think about this? I was going to get another box and attach it to mine, but I don't want my hamsters to get territorial over the two separate areas so I'm just opting for a larger size then their current cage can be a spare.

Its pretty short so you won't be able to fit much substrate in, but the size is great :)

Hmm, see it would be more space for them to run in, but less space for them to dig. I might call into Wilkos tomorrow and have a look at it in person, might even see if I can get it tomorrow rather than having to wait until next Wednesday :p

This is the one I have. I have a 6.5" silent spinner in it and there is loads of room above it from wheel to lid. I have meshed the frone, one side and the lid. This way, I can bulk up one end for burrowing if the ham needed to burrow somewhere.

Is it big enough for your ham Ian?

It is. He is on one level and has his wooden house where he can also go on the roof. I have a sand bath in one corner, a corner loo, a bridge, a swing, silent spinner and his food bowls in it and there is still room for him to roam around.

Ah it seems big enough :D do you think it would be enough space for two dwarfs?

I use Sterilite bins here and some are 66 Liters and others are 110 litters. Both fit an 8 inch WW and a tunnel bridge a water bottle and chew toys in it.

Thank you :D my boyfriend is going to buy a new storage bin tomorrow so hopefully they'll have a new place by tomorrow :D

TBH, I think two dwarfs need more room. The large wooden cage I have would be big enough for two, but I would never have two together again. They seem happy enough on their own.

My cage is 130 litres and it's from ikea - the samla bin :) my boy has plenty of room to run around in and he loves it ☺️ He'res a picture:

Bought the 62L one because it's the biggest I could find, it was only £7.50 too which I was pleased about, I didn't even realise wilkos sold hamster toys, so with the spare money that was left I ended up getting them treats and toys
Only trouble is I'm getting the bus home and it's very awkward sitting with a storage box that takes up two seats :lol:

We did that before... Except to make it even worse I was on crutches at the time so they were taking up space too lol

I had mine delivered. £5 bus fare to town and back, and only £3 delivery. Came in two days. Very quick, but if I was going into town already, it would have been better. When it was delivered, the box it was in was twice the size of the bin. I thought I only bought one, not the entire stock. lol

Lol well at least you could have recycled the box and turned it into a giant maze or something

I cut it in half length wise and made a large playpen out of it. It was too big for the room really. lol

Lol I wish I'd got one if those boxes, it's like 2 things for the price of 1 haha

Cage set up :D (water bottle is next to the wheel but don't think you can see it in the photo), both of the hamsters seem very happy so I'm pleased. Miso is enjoying his wheel whilst Pocky is just enjoying licking off the vegetable oil I used to stop it squeaking  they've both been jumping around and running everywhere so I think they're satisfied with their new home ;)
(Not sure why the photo is upside down )

Nice. Are you going to mesh it. It will need at least the lid doing for ventilation.

XRubyRoseX
09-24-2014, 11:32 AM
I've asked my dad to give me a hand meshing it since I'm crap with DIY lmao, for now I've drilled 50 half inch holes in the top and then some around the sides. The other bin cage I had I did this with and that was okay, but when I'm around and I can supervise I leave the lid off to let more air in. :)

I still tend to do that with the lid even though it is meshed. I suppose it is because I can see Marvin better than looking through mesh. I dont think the hams can climb out unless they are robo's and they can jump.

Yeah I'd love to have a little mesh window too :D I'll probably get mesh tomorrow and ask him to give me a hand after work :p
