View Full Version : Quilling

I've been learning to quill, just for fun :
Quilling is coiling and shaping strips of coloured paper and glueing them to make a design. Usually the paper is 3mm wide.
I've been making them into greetings cards for family and friends :) some are purely quilling and some I have made and printed a design and then added quilling to it :)
Hope you enjoy seeing them :)

Thank you Braingirl :)

I made these 2 birthday cards this afternoon, although they aren't quilled I thought I would add them on here anyway :) The hardest part is trying to decide what they would like, Matt recently did a butterfly release so I thought he would enjoy Tiggerr catching butterflies :) And Chlesea will be 16, all 16yr old young ladies like shoes right? :)

Thank you so much everyone :)

That fish is amazing! I used to do some quilling when I was a kid but nothing near as detailed as that. How long do they take you?

It depends what they are really, some like the frogs just take a couple of hours but some take days lol The fish I worked on for a couple of hours each day, for about a week, so that one probably took about 14 hours all told :) It was worth it though :) The person I gave it too has framed it :)

Okay, that is pretty badass :) I've had a go at quilling in the past & can do quite a nice hummingbird but nothing anywhere as neat as that. I don't have the patience. And even if I did, I get in too much of a mess with the glue

Willow Wisp
11-22-2014, 02:21 AM
Thank you both :)
Velma, it's nice to meet a fellow quiller :) although really I just fiddle and hope they work out not too bad lol.
I have to be honest, I did lose patience with Darth Vadar, and wished I hadn't started it several times lol.
It's only a 6x6 birthday card which means most of the paper pieces are exceptionally tiny, I had to do it all under a magnifier, and yes there is glue everywhere lol.
A bigger version would be much easier to make, I must remember that next time I decide to make someone a card :)

Vader is amazing! Well done for sticking with him Willow.

I've dabbled with quilling in the past but a wrist injury has put pay to a lot of crafting activities like quilling and cross stitch :( I now just do scrapbooking as and when I'm well enough.

Hi Willow - that is amazing, I love them all especially the bird and the frogs!
How did you get into Quilling?
They look so professional, you could be onto a little business earner.
Where did you get the materials to make them?
I would love to see a hamster quill xx

In truth I read about somebody saying they did quilling and I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about so I had to google it to work out what they were talking about lol. Google pointed me in the direction of a couple of YouTube videos and from there I just thought I'd try it :)
It doesn't cost much to get started, you just need a quilling tool which costs aprox £2 and a pack of 3mm paper strips which also cost about £2 and a pot of glue :)
I get my paper from here, she sells everything you need plus lots of stuff you don't need too lol

I really don't know how I've missed this for so long! All your designs are stunning Willow, there are some very lucky people out there getting cards from you :D

Thanks Cypher, it's nice to make things for people, I'm glad your feeling inspired, I would love to see what you make :)
I'm thinking of starting on some simple Christmas cards today, they need to be simple because of being made in volume, but I have no idea as yet what to do on them, I'm waiting for the inspiration to hit me like it has you lol :)

My goodness, how many strips are in the robin?

Lovely work, you sure have a lot of patience! I too would love to see a quilled hamster!

For your Xmas cards, how about a bauble, holly with berries or a star. All of those should be easy to make in bulk!

Those are just beautiful Willow Wisp. I looked up quilling after I saw it here on HC. I'm not sure of I want to start another hobby. :-D It turns out that Amazon and ebay have all the supplies I would need. It looks like a really wonderful hobby to have. :-D

Hi Dax, quilling itself doesn't need much, just some 3mm strips of paper, glue and a quilling tool all available from here for just a couple of £'s

The Home Of Quilling Supplies - JJ Quilling Design (http://www.jjquilling.co.uk/)

or like DrK says I'm sure Amazon and EBay will have them too.

As for the embossing part on some of my cards, well I also make patchwork quilts and after many days, weeks and months of measuring and cutting out patchwork size pieces of fabric to sew together I decided to invest in a cuttlebug machine to help. It's just a hand roller really, you buy a die of the shape you want, pop the fabric on top of it and roll it through the machine which cuts it for you :)
The great thing about it is they also do dies to cut paper shapes for cards, I have bought a reindeer one to add to some of my cards this year :) and they also do embossing folders, you put the card into the folder and then roll it through the machine :) I'm sure the dies and folders are also readily available on places like Amazon, EBay and Hobbycraft but I get mine from The Range, I have found them the cheapest :) I also get my blank cards from The Range too :)

So to sum up, I first print a greeting on the card, then they have been embossed using the cuttlebug, (other bands of machines are available :)), although I don't always emboss :) then I quill the design and add it :) I also cut a piece of paper and add it on the inside of the cards, adding inserts make them look nice :)

I can't remember where I bought my cuttlebug from but here is a link to show you what it is :)
Cuttlebug Die Cutter & Embossing Machine V2 | Craft Superstore (http://www.craftsuperstore.co.uk/Papercrafting/Die_Cutting_and_Embossing/Cuttlebug/Cuttlebug_Machines__and__Accessories/Cuttlebug-20-00293.html?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Shopping&utm_campaign=Cuttlebug+Die+Cutter+and+Embossing+Ma chine+V2&gclid=CIz227jCuMICFWnJtAodo2EAUQ)

I agree it will look absolutely fabulous on your wedding invites Bec :)
Personally I wouldn't buy a kit like that, they cost a fortune for very little contents. Take a look at this quillling supplies site
The Home Of Quilling Supplies - JJ Quilling Design (http://www.jjquilling.co.uk/)
I use it all the time, she's great and the things usually arrive next day :) all you need to get started is a pack of paper strips, some glue and a quilling tool, nothing else, so it will only cost you a couple of £'s. As for learning how to do it, take look on Youtube everything you need to know is on there, or visit a library or Amazon for a quilling book.
Good luck, if you need any help with anything just ask :)

Bec

Thank you so much for posting that link, its fab and already checked out some YouTube links. Think I may try with heart shapes first. The name of the hotel that we are hoping to get married at, all being well and we like it, is coral beach. So hoping to quill either shell, coral or star fish shapes.....think that's possible??

I think making your own adds a personal touch. Already designed and premade the first save the date.....doing magnets! Save lots of £ too!!? X

Bec
02-07-2015, 11:09 AM
Another quick question....others maybe interested too....what mm do you use on your quilling (typically) x

Willow Wisp
02-07-2015, 01:58 PM
Of course it's possible :) With a little practice you will be able to do whatever you want :)
Your friends and family are going to love the personal touch :)
Wow magnets are such a great idea, it's a momento that everyone can keep and is useful too :)

99% of quilling is done with 3mm strips, only finer work is done with the 2mm strips.
I've found the 5mm is great for making roses and the 10mm is only really used for fringing or maybe 3D work.

I would suggest starting off with one pack of multicoloured paper, rather than a normal pack of all one colour, Then you can practice making different shapes and the various colours will make it more interesting for you :) This pack is just £1.85
Search for "Rainbow" - JJ Quilling Design (http://www.jjquilling.co.uk/?s=Rainbow&post_type=product)
Once you have learnt how to do the shapes and decided exactly what your projects are going to be then you can buy the individual colour packs you want and need :)
The glue is just PVA which you can buy anywhere, I use the tacky one, just because it's a little thicker and I prefer it but any PVA will work :)

Good luck and please let me know how it's going :)

Bec
02-07-2015, 03:27 PM
Thank you again, think I'm going to get the deluxe pack from the link, much cheaper than the one I first looked at. Of course will let you know how it goes....think I may need a lot of practice but wedding not til May 2016 so got time to learn! x

Ps.....yeahhhhhh ordered, hopefully will arrive early next week! Thank you x
