Conker was one of the nuts, he arrived with 12 others in a smelly cage with little to do and a possible history of starvation. We separated the males and females and Conker found himself with four other males who unfortunately couldn't all always get along. Eventually we separated them and Conker found himself just living with Wheelnut - the only one of the three slightly dominant mice who had never shown any negative behaviours towards him. Unfortunately they never really settled as a pair and in the end we found signs of bruising on Conkers tail and decided we had to separate before Conker got any worse injuries.
Conker never entirely settled to life alone, he was quiet and seemed ok but we knew he could be a lot happier with company once more. When he had lived with others he'd spent a lot of time with them and really did enjoy the company - as all of the males seemed to. As Conker was male the only option for company was to get him castrated, so we discussed castration with our vet and decided to go ahead. We booked both Conker and Wheelnut to be castrated, they had their surgery this morning and unfortunately Conker stopped breathing during the operation.
RIP Conker, I'm sorry we've lost you and I'm sorry you won't get to meet some girlfriends later after all. I'm also sorry we couldn't quite convince your ex-cagemates to behave themselves and get along with you before it came to separation and neutering.
