I don't think they really actively eat hay as part of their normal diet like rabbits and guinea pigs do, though they may nibble a bit if they have it as a nest. The soft timothy hay is meant to be good for their digestion.

I've never tried it, although don't imagine it would do them any harm. :?:

Hi i was told that hay is a no no with hamsters as it could get stuck in their pouches? However i dont really know anything about hamsters so it could just be someone making it up!

It has been known for the very stiff hay to pierce the pouches and cause problems. Damp hay can harbour fungus and cause chest trouble and there is always the possibility of mites.

When I was at the pet shop the other week, I saw some hay with a picture of a hamster on and I thought I'd get some but when I picked it up, it was really sharp so I was worried it would scratch their eyes or pouches.

I got some Naturals Nature's salad instead and I mix that in with the shavings. Noodles especially really likes it.
