My Hammy Harriet

Unfortunately, it is with deep sadness, that I tell you that Harriet passed away today. She was 23 months old and had a big tummy. As of yet, I am unsure of the cause of death but I suspect her tummy had something to do with it. I woke up this morning, and after a bathroom break, i went to check on her. I could sense something was wrong because yesterday, she was really weak and wobbly. It looked like it was costing every ounce of strength just to breathe. I tried everything this morning that I tried yesterday to wake her up. But alas, when i took the top off her cage and felt her, she was stiff. My mum came in and showed me that she had in fact, died peacefully in her sleep. She will be buried in the garden near my stepdad's cat. The sad irony is that today, 4 years ago, my grandad crossed the rainbow bridge. He was also called Harry. I guess he is now looking after her in heaven. Take care of her, grandad, she's my baby. And rest in peace my sweet Harriet. Mummy will miss you until we meet again. Love you both always. xxxxxxxx

Ok, so to remember Harriet's good times, I wrote down a list of things I remember about her.

1. Mum's reaction when I brought her home was like what?!??! lol

2. We put Harriet in 2 pet boxes with those in her genus 200 cage, and she gnawed through both of them! Little madam!

3. When i first got her, i thought she was a boy, so i called her Harry. Buut she was in fact a girl so take off the y and add iet lol

4. Hermione was actually going to be her name if I'd already known from the start that she was a girl. But it ended up being her middle name!

5. She was always a nippy little madam forever biting me! Owch! P.S. She bit my niece too!

6. She was so skittish and jumpy that when I took her to the vet for the first time, me and the vet kept dropping her! She wasn't hurt though so that was good.

7. My dog Bonny never left her alone! Always staring up at her cage!

8.She always loved mealworms! They were kind of her training treat!

9.One of the games we used to play was climb out the pen into the cup! I put her in her playpen and she'd climb out into the cup I was holding on the other side!

10.Mum had to put olive oil on her 1st wheel to stop it squeaking! It actually worked!

11. Harriet would always annoy me by gnawing her cage!

12. She finally let me tame her around Christmas 2012, which made it a lovely present for me!

13. Bonny kept attacking Harriet's 1st hamster ball and barking at it thinking she was inside it! Dozy dog!

14. My stepdad (who normally doesn't like rodents) petted Harriet's head with his finger as he walked past us.

15. He helped me get Harriet's 1st ball.

16. He also took me to get her 2nd cage.

17. I once bought some cotton wool bedding for Harriet and it twisted and tangled itself round her leg! I cut her away from the main tuft but my mum cut the twisted bit off. Her leg healed up fine after that with a little run in the ball.

18. Once I'd tamed her, I found she was full of curiosity and very nosy!

19. She loved to play with bathing sand!

20. When her time was up, at least she was in a cute position, with her head on her paws.

So this is my Harriet, whom I will never forget. I'll see you again Harriet xxxx

Very sorry but the important thing to remember is that she is free from all pain and fear now and having a wonderful time being very much loved, while she waits for you.

Our little ones leave such huge pawprints on our hearts, and it only on forums such as HC that people really understand what it means to love a little hamster. Play well at the bridge little fluff - no more pain. Look out for a rainbow or a little white feather - it will be from your little Harriet. xx

Again thanks for all the kind messages. I'm going to be getting a canvas soon with a picture of Harriet on it. It will hang above my chest of drawers where her cage used to be. I actually saw a double rainbow yesterday on the way home! I also had a dream about getting a new hamster called Cinnamon, and two gerbils called Coco and Pop. It was just a dream though, and won't happen for a while. xxx
