Hi guys !!!

We're building a hamster cage from scratch... We Still have to figure out 3 things...

1: how to create ventilation ?

2: how Will the bottles stand ?

3: what to do to avoid the bottom to get dirty/stained from fluides ?

Many thanks to you !! We're open to any suggestions !!

We resolved the #1...

Not sure about the #3 but #2 is still to figure out... Other than velcro, what could be used ?

Thanks

No3: I use cut out cardboard boxes (shoes boxes specially) as tray and once a month or whenever it needed just change it. My hamster hack isn't expedit unit but is from ikea and of same material. We had it about year and never had any problem :) only thing is I'm forever collecting shoe boxes :)

Also we replaced back panels with actual hard metal mesh wall and ventilation problem was solved too :)

I made an IKEA Billy extension unit for my dwarf, Smudge. She easily litter trained, but my Chinese that is in there now...pees everywhere!! It WAS ruining the wood so I've tried several things.

#1 - Contact paper...which worked for a while, but then Pippa began eating it:shock:

#2 - Adhesive linoleum tiles....this has worked wonders! You can buy them separately (instead of in a case). Just make sure to use aquarium sealant on the joins and around the edges to keep the hammy piddle from shaping through:-)

Thank you very much !! Will look for it ! I use industrial velcro in my bin cages and it's working too much !!! Both parts won't stay apart ! SO I need another solution !

Contact paper is a thin plastic paper (with an adhesive back) that is used to line pantry shelves and drawers in the kitchen. It is easily removable or repositionable. It's a great alternative to the wood (IF your hamster doesn't eat it, like Pippa;-)

Amazon.com - Clear Contact Paper, 18" x 9' (http://www.amazon.com/Kittrich-Corporation-999300-Clear-Contact/dp/B002HNYZ40)

Hahaha...you're so funny! :-). It's fantastic to use because it comes in a BIG roll and there is more than enough so that you can replace it whenever you need to.

Hi! I don't know if it will help but I recently converted an unused wooden bookshelf in our home and liquid seeping through the wood is my first concern but luckily enough; whoever made our bookshelf used some wood putty/filler on it and the putty stops any liquid from seeping into the wood.

It also makes it easier to clean up as I only have to wipe any stains with damp cloth.

Hope it helps..

I did something similar to this, but I used aquarium sealant on every joint and corner:-)

We're going with contact paper as it is replacable... When one of our hammie dies, I would prefer to totally change the surface...

Sometimes, here, we don't have the same products than you guys over the pond... =/ It sometimes makes it difficult...

Contact paper is otherwise called stickyback plastic, for those who're confused. It's good stuff.
