I got sick of buying new beds for my hammies just because they:
a) got chewed
b) smelled really bad (I don't like using strong disinfectant in the beds)
c) were expensive

So I made my own out of small plastic tubs which were just £1 for 5 from our local pound shop!

I've got a normal design:

I cut the entrance out with a soldering iron before sanding the edges smooth. The soldering iron made the process quick and smooth.

I also made a treehouse:

The base is just like the normal house. However I used a cable tie to attatch the base of another tub onto the lid of the bottom tub. The way the top tub has been cut in such a way that I can fill it with sand to use as a sand bath. The ladders are made from some left over chicken wire from the bin cages I made earlier. I sanded the edges down so that they are safe.

I have designed these to use with dwarf robos however different size tubs can be used with ease. Something worth mentioning is if you are using a soldering iron be careful of fumes as they can be dangerous! We opened all of the windows and set up a fan.

Any questions?x

My flat mate came home and had to wrestle it out of hands  It's true, I love buying things for my hammies! However my funds are rather low at the minute, I'm trying to get a job to fund my hamster addiction :P

I think they are great, and I bet you could make lots of different 'treehouses' like this. I might try and make a syrian one, only two of my robos chew there bedrooms :? so I've ended up buying new ones ever month or so so might do it so them too.

they look well venterlated compared to ones you would normally buy as well.

I forgot to mention that I had put a fair few holes in the sides for ventelation. I was fed up of having damp hamsters and I'm sure that they didn't appretiate it either. Its like when you wake up all hot and sweaty and uncomfertable, most of my hammies prefer to sleep in tubes or cardboard boxes sometimes and I think it is due to the bad ventalation. I'm getting a tub for Rhys my syrian today as his 'hamster igloo' is aweful for it!

I've got a large tub that I'm planning on turning into a maze today, that should be fun for the robos!

Your tub beds are fantastic :-). They look really practical and are a good design suitable for all types of hamster. Looking forward to seeing the next installment :-)
