Hi, i'm planning to make a bin cage in time for a hammy for xmas. I've found a "tutorial" but just wondering if people have any tips on the process when you've made yours.
Also what dimensions do i need to be looking for?

Also should the mesh go on the inside or outside?

Most people go as big as they can but it might depend on what type of hamster you're planning to get.
I used a Really Useful Box (145L) but other people have used the 84L size. This is the most expensive box but there is nothing inside that can be chewed to get out.
I put the mesh on the inside fixed with cable ties. If you put it on outside, there is an edge which your hamster can chew and possibly hurt themselves on.
I cut the mesh a bit bigger that the hole and doubled over the edges, putting the cut edge on box side rather than on the side where your hamster can reach it. I flattened down the edges all round - you should be able to run you hand over the mesh from the inside without feeling any rough bits.
Hope this helps
