Hi, someone told me that my Russian hamster from p@h is a pudding hamster as it will be a hybrid. Is this correct?

I think you'd need to show us a photo, I thought pudding hamsters were quite rare over here?

As far as I understand, 'pudding', 'mushroom' etc are names made up to describe colours in hybrids to aid selling! I don't really like or use terms like them, I just call them hybrids or hybrid Russians :)

And most dwarves in pet shops are hybrids, pure bred winter whites and Campbell's are most likely only available from breeders.

A pudding hamster is a name used in America to describe a 'round pudding shaped' Russian type hamster. This can be a Winter white type, a Campbell type or a Hybrid. Hamsters from pets shops are virtually always hybrids.
There are loads of names used by pet shops to make certain types seem more desirable and thus cost more money eg: Black Bear - Black or Sable syrians. Panda Bear - black banded syrian, Dalmation - Recessive dappled black, Teddy Bear - long haired syrian, Pudding - russian type and others as well.
Don't be taken in by fancy names or rarity claims. Nearly all are easy to find and easy to breed!

I had never heard of the term `pudding` hamster but I do agree that there are made up fancy terms for many hamsters as soufflé was saying. It can confuse people because they can buy a hamster thinking it`s something new or something rare, when all it really is, is a hybrid with a fancy colour!

Oh, just thought of another one. In the US mandarins are sometimes referred to as 'Sunfire hamsters' and can be expensive. ;)
