What toys have you made for your pet? I love making them and the hamsters enjoys exploring them and then destroying them!x

you could try, if you have a wire cage, making hanging cardboard rolls. attach a piece of string to both end and tie that to the cage. due to my Chinese being very active and mad about climbing they use them loads.

Here is a DIY guide to making a hammy treat tube, I have made a few for Molly and she goes nuts for them.

You will need: Scissors, cardboard tube, food, treats, bedding.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/Geniverger/26022008971.jpg

Start by making cuts in the tube about 1.5cm apart.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/Geniverger/26022008972.jpg

Slot them together in a circular pattern and push the point in. This makes a seal.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/Geniverger/26022008975.jpg

Turn it over, fill in layers with food, bedding and treats. Hammys will love diffing inside the tube for the treats and food, and will use the bedding to customise their beds!
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/Geniverger/26022008976.jpg

Repeat steps images 2 and 3 on the other side.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/Geniverger/26022008977.jpg

Poke a few holes in the sides so your hammy can smell the food and treats inside and to help little hammy teeth get a hold.

That's great :-). I'm going to have a go at them too and bury them in the woodshavings so they have to dig for them.

thanks for sharing

That is a great idea Geniverger, and i am sure the hammies love them!

Just one thing though, the bedding you are using, is it the fluffy, cotton wool type bedding? if it is then please stop using it and replace it with one of the safer kinds. The fluffy bedding can be very dangeous for hamsters as the limbs can get caught and can injured. It is also dangerous because if it gets swallowed it cannot be digested and cause blockages.

It is not your fault, i used it myself when i first saw it, it looks great and looks so comfy for the hamster, but it can be quite dangerous.

Kind Regards,

Tammy x

Tammy - the computer I am using is very dark - i think the screen is packing up so I couldn't see the fluffy bedding. :-(
Thanks for mentioning it though as it's not the greatest material for hamsters and their little paws, tums etc and its much better to use something like plain toilet roll, which hamsters seem to love! I could hear my two shredding their toilet roll this morning, which was very loud considering they are really very tiny and it was so very early :-)

I like to just get a roll of toilet paper and put it through the cross-cut shredder. I can just leave it going for 5minutes and bingo really cheap hamster bedding! I get the value loo rolls from tesco which I think are about 70p for 12. Seeing as though you can pay £2 for a tiny fraction of what you can make yourself for over half the price it is a real bargain!

Yeah I don't use that kind of bedding any more, I just don't have any recent pictures. My hammy loves toilet roll and that pre-packaged stuff that looks like shredded loo roll.

Greeeeeat!

I will make some now. I think I will make more holes in it because I have 2 winter whites and they are quite tiny and I want to ease their job  . Thanks a bunch for the idea!

I made a tube-like thing and a hammock out of fabric, and a level made out of cardboard.

I haven't tried this yet but I just thought of the idea. You could take an ankle sock and sow a bangle bracelet into the "hem" of the ankle end, folded inside to conceal the bangle so it makes one of those snuggle pouches that you can hang or they can sleep in, Hope that description makes sense :s The bangle acts as a hard wire to keep the sock entrance open to make a sleeping bag pouch!

I really like that toilet tube idea, Geniverger! I've made one for Ham and put it in his cage, hopefully he'll get a kick out of it :D

I've not made any custom toys yet, though I do find that Pooham loves just about any cardboard box.

ETA: Made one of the little treat tubes last night, this morning he'd destroyed it and got the yummy treats out - think he enjoyed it! :) Will definitely do it again.

Looks fabby. I also use any empty oxo cube boxes or similar. Fill with treats and close the lid, all mine go nuts for em..especially as it still smells of Oxo

I made and make something simlular for my hamsters, too.
I usse empty toilet paper rolls and instead of cutting the end , i just fold the ends to the inside of the roll.
Some of my hamsters used to "disturb" the rolls after a few trys even when i didn't cut holes in it because they understood it really fast.
At the moment, only one of my 3 hamsters is interested in these rolls.. at least one having fun with them \\:D/

Wow, am amazed at how simple it is to make :D Being bad at DIY, i thought i'd give it a try and it took me just under 3-5 minutes!! My hamster truffles looved it! and destroyed it in just under 2 minutes \\:D/ Will definately be making this toy on a regular basis for my hamster! Thanks for the ideas!!! Love this toy sooo much! Regards from truffles too :)
