I was just inspired by another thread talking about sizes of hamsters. Keeping track of your hamster's weight with regular weighing is always a good idea, something I do every few weeks or so. It's useful to spot any trends in growth or weight changes that might not be so obvious to the naked eye right away. I thought if we had a thread here, we could all post our hammies' weights every now and then to keep track and encourage each other to do it!

I use ordinary digital kitchen scales, and usually place the hamster in a bowl or something to keep them still (the girl robos, who are so lively, have to be weighed in their travel box or they'd be off).

What does everyone think?

Never weighed mine before, so will give it a try tomorrow, might try to see if I can get an approximation of their length too

I'll try the same as well, with my two if I can remember lol, I can get so distracted in the day, or else I just plain forget hehe  would probably be good to weigh Gerald at this point in his life.

ok hamster weights for mine tonight are
Si our new male hamster (don't know how old he is - guy said young end of fully grown whatever that may be ) 75g/3oz
Ponder who is the tiny one of the lot, and she is about 4 months and 2 weeks old 50g/2oz
Shadow, our big one, though does not look fat, she is 4 months and 3 weeks old 125g/4.5oz

Do these seem ok or should I worry about any of them?

Nelson weighs 152g and is 6 months. Males tend to weigh less than females. We tracked him from 4wks and he seems to have stopped now but some breeders say they sometimes have a sudden growth spurt a bit later. I think he runs off all his food as he is so active all the time!!!!

I would fatten your guys up with porridge and scrambled egg every other day

SnuggleHam

Gerald weighed in at about 96 grams. He looks kind of thin in the side, other wise seems healthy and fine, bright eyes and what not. I saw the Nelson weighs 152g, Im bit worried about gerald, but I think this all may be a result of his old age.

Does that sound about normal for a syrian hamster 96 grams??

nooboo
09-07-2005, 10:05 AM
will do... I have been giving them carrot, bits of apple, and I did share around half a boiled egg withthem the other day. They have more than enough dry food. I am so worried now, especially Ponder as she is the lightest by far - I can't see where I am going wrong

pophammy
09-07-2005, 11:09 AM
Noodoo, are your hamsters dwarfs or syrians because they are very light for Syrians. It very much depends on the breeding of the hamster. Showhams are bred for size and type and should be as large as possible (They want 180g -220g but doubt Nelson will ever be that big!) but petshop hams seem to be alot smaller. Alot depends on the feeding of the mother and the way the litter was raised. Dwarfs are much smaller than syrians. As long as they are active and look healthy then don't worry! :P

nooboo
09-07-2005, 11:16 AM
they are all Syrians. Ponder has been a bit sluggish of late, but then she is a late riser. I feed them tonnes. Their bowls are never empty. I give them treats of cheese, egg, carrot, and fruits, but I am now in a panic as Ponder is only 50g. She is very small, but not skinny, just tiny. I guess the other two are just about at the lighter end of normal, but I am so worried for her now

PJ

My lightest adult dwarf is a rescued Campbells she weights 52 grams

My heaviest is Bubba, he weighs 73 grams. A bit heavy I know but he's massive. Not fat just chunky and in proportion

My average is 60 grams

Emma
09-07-2005, 12:33 PM
My Phoebe weighs in at 173g....and then I broke the scales by dropping them!!! (not with Phoebs!) Lol so will have to wait a little bit for robo weights!! Phoebs is a large female syrian, from a rescue but a good sized ham.

Nooboo, I have had syrians weighing in around the 70g mark before (also had dwarves around that weight!), there is a huge variation in the sizes of hamsters dependent on the breeding. Nelson is a well-bred show ham so I'd expect him to be larger than the average pet shop hamster. As long as the hamster is eating well and looks well-covered for it's size (i.e. doesn't look too bony) then I wouldn't worry too much about fattening them up - although of course nutritious treats are always welcome!

50g may well be normal for Ponder if she is of smaller stature, as long as she is fine in herself and not skinny, I wouldn't worry. Are you concerned about anything other than her weight?

nooboo
09-11-2005, 02:03 PM
I thought she might have wet tail a few days back, but she seems fine now. She has a terrible habit of peeing on her food store. It can't be good for her and she does seem a little sleepy. Then again she then decided to get up today at 10 am for a cuddle, so, she seems fine in her own rather odd way.

Emma
09-15-2005, 03:47 PM
I weighed all my Roborovskis today:
Lola: 26g
Shirley: 26g
Pippin: 31g
Merry: 41g
Merry is such a wopper! He's really really round now. I'd appreciate if other people could post weights of their adult male Robos to compare - I think Merry may be going on a diet!

Emma
09-27-2005, 06:16 AM
Robo weigh-in day again today, and everyone seems to have lost 2g!! Wonder whether it's the scales rather than the hammies?
Lola: 24g
Shirley: 24g
Merry: 39g
Pippin: 29g
Phoebe is 146g, I think I said somewhere once that she was 173g last time I weighed her, I made a mistake  - when I looked in my notebook she was actually 143g. So she's about the same.

pophammy
09-27-2005, 07:23 AM
Bailey at 4 weeks was 64g and yesterday Monday she was 84g so is growing fast! Nelson has stayed the same at around 150g. I think 2g can be the difference between 'to poo or not to poo' that is the question!

Yeah getting them to unpoucch before weighing can often be difficult

Emma
09-27-2005, 11:54 AM
Merry happily unpouched in the little travelling cage as soon as I put him in there - then had to juggle holding him whilst I emptied out the case then re-zeroing the scales before I could put him back in.....cheeky monster

babyboos
09-27-2005, 01:57 PM

Roborovski seem to be able to pouch so much but from external appearances you can hardly see a bulge

nooboo,

My Nibbles when he was around 3 months old still only weighed in at 2oz. He slowely put on weight and then only around 6 months plus did he gain. his fur also didn't really grow all that much till after 6 months (Long-haired).

I think some are just genetically going to be smaller / lighter. As long as you keep an eye on things and Ponder is eating plenty and acts ok then there may be nothing to worry about.

As for peeing on his food - do you put his food in a bowl or scatter it on the ground? Scattering it on the ground (some of it) can be a good thing sometimes as it will encourage natural forageing and he's not going to pee on every little seed he finds scattered around! So for a while maybe scatter his food in several little piles throughout his cage and see how that goes.

Just a suggestion :-)

nooboo
10-05-2005, 01:55 PM
the problem is when she moves the food, she moves it into a tube, and then sleeps uphill of it and then moves to it and pees just above it so it runs down onto the food. I have tried to relocate her from the tube but she just moves back. I will weigh her again once the little ones have been moved out

Coco1
10-05-2005, 02:01 PM
lol little rascal!

Is there anyway of changing her sleeping nest? A different arrangment somehow?

Obviously some hamster DO pee on their food and may even do so in the wild, I don't know? But I know they live in a very sensory world so maybe he just likes that way! ?

He may grow out of it too, they do change their habits sometimes :D

Good luck!

Coco did you see the thread in breeding re 'I feel like a monster 'regarding Ponder who escaped and has now had babies! May explain changes.

Coco1
10-06-2005, 06:42 AM
lol no I hadn't but just read somwhere that mentioned about her babies which explained things! (Thats what happens when you don't come in here for a while)! So yes, of course you can't just "change out her bed" right now LOL!

I'm sure things will probably change again once the babies are gone and she re decorates the place!

OK...
I don't know whether this will scare anyone, by the last time I weighed Kim, one of my Syrians, she was 275g.
She's a Silver Grey girl from a breeder known for big hamsters - not fat at all, just enormous.
Haven't weighed anyone for a while, so maybe I will and post the results.

Emma

Emma
01-19-2006, 04:16 AM
The boy robos got their health checks today - 29g for Pip and 36g for Merry. That's usual for Pippin, Merry is a few g lighter than last time but he's still a round little boy! But not quite as round as he used to me, it seems limiting the nuts & seeds in his diet has done some good. He needs his nails clipping and I can't find my smallest nail clippers though!

01-19-2006, 10:52 AM
At 7 weeks old, the two pups from my recent litter that I am keeping are 140 grams...

My 3 adults are about 160, and the little guy that I just recently got is in quarantine, so I have yet to weigh him.

Pendragon
03-09-2006, 12:06 PM
That's very good going! :D

Berry's lot were between 21-34g at 16 days. They're now 5 weeks 4 days and the biggest (male) is 110g, largest female is 108g. Both parents of these are big, though... Elderberry is over 200g and Nandi about 185-190g.

I might have to keep the big boy. He's going to look rather imposing if he keeps growing.... Other hamsters will call him "Sir"!

He was called Dylan, but trying to think of something more noble. Or totally ironic, like "Mosquito" or "Midge". Hmmmm.... could always call him "Shorty"!!

Boy robos today - Pippin 27g, Merry 28g. That's usual for Pip, but Merry has lost 8g in the last 2 months. He was 39g at his heaviest I think! He seems to be eating fine, I have been limiting his diet still a bit, his teeth are fine and he seems healthy. It seems at last I've managed to slim the little chubster down.

pophammy
12-30-2006, 09:56 AM
I think that most Dwarfs weigh around 35-60g, depending on the breeding line. Show hamsters tend to be larger, whilst petshop hams may be a bit smaller. Our school hamster, Spud, weighs about 40g, and he is a Campbell's.

souffle
01-03-2007, 06:54 AM
That is a perfectly normal and good weight for a pet shop bought hamster Minicooper. Show hamsters are bred to be bigger as the standard calls for an animal a good size. I would say a show hamster would be between 180 -250g. Males are usually smaller than females.

Minicooper
01-03-2007, 07:05 AM
Hammis is a female

pophammy
01-03-2007, 10:01 AM
We know that minicooper, but as she is petshop bought she is very likely to be a lot smaller than a show hamster from a breeder. She is a fine size for a pet ham!

souffle
01-04-2007, 02:08 AM
I would say that is perfectly fine Snuggleham. Like us it depends on their activity levels, cycle and even time of day ie full bladder & bowel/pouches or not   A large weight gain or loss in an adult hamster requires veterinary attention though.

Macy weighed 130 grams this past Tuesday. She just had a hysterectomy for a pyometra infection of the uterus and weighed 162 grams before surgery and 128 grams right afterwards. Her uterus (full of infected pus) was almost 1/4 of her body weight! She's 17 months old and seems to be on a slow but steady road to recovery (thankfully)!

Please watch out  for sudden weight gain and sluggishness in your female hams!!

Conker weighs 130g
Fuzee Fi weights 110g

Fuz is a little light I think? Although she does feel chunkier in your hand, if you get what I mean.

Conker has put on weight but generally fluctuates between 125g and 130g (just like most of us girls then)...

pophammy
01-17-2007, 12:18 PM
Some hamsters are naturally larger than others, and Fuzee Fi may just be a small ham! There is nothing wrong with her unless she has lost or gained weight suddenly. Our Runty (R.I.P  ) was only ever about 120g at his max.

That is a good weight Donna. We have a 7wk old at 100g but he is male and they are smaller. They keep growing till about 6months and slow up towards the end of this time. Our females peak about 200g on average and males about 180g. Pet shop hams are usually a lot lighter and smaller.

*sigh* Charlie is still only 119g :(

About a month ago was talking to his breeder about him and she suggested taking the wheel away for a fortnight and giving him lots of time out of the cage (he was spending about 4 hours out of the cage everyday in total I guess) and lots of treats..it helped a bit, he gained about 15g....but now he's constantly on his wheel again and he doesn't look underweight but I see piccies of chunky hams and wonder if there's something wrong...gah.

I'll stop rambling now lol.

Weighed everyone tonight

Syrians first:

Mocha 155g
Treacle 118g
Custard 120g

Mocha was always the biggest of our three original hamsters - I'm slightly reassured by Treacle only being a little lighter than Custard, though he feels more bony after his illness.

(he's nearly four months old and he weighs less than Mars at nearly two months old - I have a feeling I haven't been feeding him enough while he's been growing, though he is very active and Mars isn't).

[b]Minnie 152g
Mars 145g
Kitty 125g
Button 122g
Milly 115g
Smartie 112g

Finally the WW;s:
Turner 64g
Sparrow 60g (less difference there than I thought.

Buttons, Male Syrian, 15 weeks - 110g

I did my weekly weigh in tonight (I didn't weigh Bean or the ww's or our three "old men" Mocha, Treacle and Custard as we only do them once a month). I also didn't wiegh Aero as I'd like to let her settle a day or two more before I mess her about.

Caramel (10 months female) 190g

Rolo (6 months male) 175g

Minstrel (20 weeks female) 189g

Mars (19 weeks male) 189g

Smartie (19 weeks female) 184g

Kit Kat (19 weeks female) 180g

Button (19 weeks male) 170g

Milky Bar (19 weeks female) 169g

Toblerone (18 weeks male) 184g

Malteser (14 weeks female) 164g

Some have lost a little some have gained a little but they all seem to be growing up into nice-ish types. It's interesting that they all grow at different rates but there's not a huge amount in it between the heaviest and lightest now - they all get there in the end!

Max is just over 7weeks old and is 68g

Don't worry Jayne, they are all different. My Sid only weighed 90g when he was 5 months old. He weighs around 130g, give or take now. I'm sure Max is fine as long as he is eating and active. Is he a wheel addict?

Thats ok then, he seems to be a little bigger now. Steadily putting on the beef
He isnt really a wheel addict, that i've seen anyway. Although that may change when he gets his wodent.

Right here we go again, 10 days later than the last weigh-ins.
Before anyone worries about how much Buttons' weight has dropped by I would like to point out that he had full cheek pouches last time!

Gizmo - 23 1/2 weeks - 152g (+5g)
Buttons - 22 1/2 weeks - 104g (-11g)
Uno - 12 1/2 weeks - 92g (+10g)
Amelie - 10 1/2 weeks - 170g (+16g!)

Wow! Amelie's piling it on

I haven't weighed anyone other than my two pregnant girls and Aero for a while (weigh night tonight).

Aero is now 12 and half weeks old - and she weighs 151g!! Not bad for a P@H special - and it illustrates what feeding them up when they are growing can do, I think. She certainly isn't fat but she's filling out nicely and starting to look grown up - which is good as she's off to Sheryl's next month and will hopefully be a mummy

Holly

Can anyone tell me at what age Syrians should STOP growing?

The reason I ask is that my 5-6 month olds are still gaining weight - some as much as 10g in a week (though admittedly the one that gained 10g this week is Mars who lost some weight when he cut his neck recently).

I now have:

Caramel 180g (1 year F)
Rolo 184g (9 months M - recent fairly rapid gain  )
Minstrel 200g (6 months F)
Mars 196g (6 months M)
Button 175g (6 months M)
Smartie 203g - pregnant, I hope!
Milly 170g (6 months F)
Kitty 194g (6 months F)
Toby 196g (6 months M)
Molly 196g (4 months - and pregnant, I hope!)
Aero 154g (13 weeks F)

Is it normal for my 6 month olds to still be putting on weight or am I fattening them up too much? And what about Rolo - he's nearly 9 months and has put on nearly 20g this past month?!

Basia
03-28-2008, 05:44 PM
I don't know if it's normal but some of mine are still gaining weight. :?
Cara now weighs 168g, which is about 10g gain since I weighed her at the end of February.
Runty has also gained about 10g.
My bigger ones seem to stay about the same now, it is the smaller ones which still gain.

Havent done a full weigh in for a while, but Dubaku certainly seems to be filling out (thank goodness frankly) and becoming less rangy.

I am soooo proud of Molly too - I dont think Amelie is anywhere near that weight, she certainly doesn't look it.

I weighed my Topaz two nights ago though - and at 7 weeks is 126g and I was really pleased with that - until I realised that she needs to put on 44g in 3 1/2 weeks to match Mollz's amelie!

Holly

I don't know if it's normal but some of mine are still gaining weight.

That's good then - the only thing is that my biggest are still gaining (though they still aren't as big as yours, Gill, so maybe that's why). Mars is male - is 196g a bit chubby for a boy? I don't want him to be fat :(

Havent done a full weigh in for a while, but Dubaku certainly seems to be filling out (thank goodness frankly) and becoming less rangy.

It seems Rolo is the same then - the hard thing is that, if they aren't going to look their best 'til this age, how exactly do you decide who to use to continue your lines? It's not so bad with the boys - perhaps Rolo will get to be a daddy after all as he's certainly looking better these days - if he were a girl it would be too late now :?

Milly, after a not brilliant start to her show career, finally seems to be filling out and she's getting nice and dark too - the problem is that I've already decided to mate her larger sister and Molly - I can't have anymore litters at this stage -and I've got a feeling she might end up being really nice and I'm going to regret it.

I am soooo proud of Molly too - I dont think Amelie is anywhere near that weight, she certainly doesn't look it.

Well she is (I hope) pregnant - her usual weight is around 180-182g, prbably not so different from Amelie. I can't see how else she could have put quite that much on in a week!

I weighed my Topaz two nights ago though - and at 7 weeks is 126g and I was really pleased with that - until I realised that she needs to put on 44g in 3 1/2 weeks to match Mollz's amelie!

Some of my youngsters have put 12g on in a single week - Topaz only needs to do that four times in a row and he's there :P

Alvin weighs in at..........134g

He is going to be 9 weeks old tomorrow.

He looks slimmer since last week as he has fallen in love with his new Wodent Wheel.

He is never out of it. I mean literally...he has built his nest in there, and seems to forget about it, as he still runs in it all night with bedding and food spinning round with him! I bought him a nice quiet wheel, and he adds his own sound effects! Kids eh?

My hamster weights from this month:
hamster weight1.JPG[/attachment:d2ydikbq]
hamster weight2.JPG[/attachment:d2ydikbq]

All are robos except Rhys who is syrian.
Jaffa Cake was pregnant however it is visable that she has gained weight since the birth. Rhys is a pup at just 11 weeks old. However he's packing on that weight as you can see!
Twix has lost some (almost had to resort 2 atkins diet  )

I weighed my two male syrians today...

Dusty is around 8 months old and is 140g...

Hammibal is around 5 months old and is 100g... I've been looking at all of your posts in this thread and all your hammies seem a lot heavier! Especially Hammibal... how can I fatten them up!? 8)

It depends on their breeding and genetic make up melon. Breeder hamsters are bred for size as that is what is required at shows. Maybe Hannibal is just a small hamster naturally. As long as he is active, curious, glossy and well covered I would not worry. You could give him a little extra protein such as chicken, tofu, porridge, cooked pasta, scrambled egg. Most pet shop hammies tend to be around 120-130 g.

Melon

Thanks souffle... he is looking on the skinny side but he is VERY active lol, I'll stop worrying about him as much now :) I'll give him some of those bits every now and then and see if he fattens up :D

Is he a grey hamster Melon? Greys are genetically smaller than the other colours anyway especially the Dark greys.

Chess got weighed at the vets on Thursday, she was 150g exactly she is 6 months 3 weeks old - is she in the right weight/age bracket?

She is a pale gray syrian - I'm thinking she is on the tubby side... by what I have read on here.

I love her regardless!!

08-09-2008, 07:40 AM
150g sounds a normal weight to me, especially if she is a pet shop syrian, as breeder hams do tend to be quite a lot bigger than others, getting up to as much as 250g! :D

She certainly doesn't sound hugely overweight, although of course, like in humans it depends on her general size. If she is fit happy and healthy with shiny fur and plenty of energy I wouldn't worry at all. she does sound a normal weight :D

Looking at his photos he looks VERY healthy (and terribly gorgeous) and I think it would show in his coat if there were any problems. :) He hasn't dipped in weight has he?

Aren't females generally bigger anyway? Poppet is the biggest hamster I've had - most of my other girls have been 140-160 if I remember rightly.

When Poppet was very active with her wheel she was a skinny little one too, but has piled on the pounds after her wheel has gone out of fashion and now is chubbier but healthy.

Don't worry folks. It all delends on their genetics. Pet shop hammys usually range from about 120 - 180g with females beinh heavier. Some pet shops get hammies from breeders who breed for a larger size. As long as your hammy is bright active and healthy with a glossy coat there is no cause for concern. It is when you see and sudden or gradual change in something that is not simply ageing that you should have them checked,

happysaz133
09-26-2008, 03:54 AM
That's OK then, he's dropped in weight, so I assume he's healthy, plus his coat is shiny! I think most of mine have been males, so I'm not really used to the weight of females :)

I'm happy again now, thanks you two!

Ooh I have some big hams :x

Rowan is our largest, she is 235g, six months old. Kett is 203g, five months old. Ruaridh is 185g, five months old. Woody is 190g, he is 18 months old. Our smallest is Kirill, 165g at five months old, but he is not "pedigree", all the others are. All our hams are in tip top health and glowing.

Those are the only ones I have weighed so far, I can't weigh our yellow girl as she has a litter in the nest at the moment, but it is interesting to keep this info and I will weigh more regularly from now on.

As some of you know my sick hammy Chomp was weighed whilst visiting the vets yesterday and is only 40g for a 9 week old.
As I now know this is very underweight. Once he has recovered from wet-tail if he does I will weigh him regularly until he's a healthier weight, around the 110g mark would be better, right?

souffle
04-17-2009, 01:13 PM
Pet shop hammies are often smaller but if you can get him up to about 120g by say 6 months that will be good. As long as he is active and glossy and eating well when he is better there will be no need to worry.
On another forum a member has a hamster who has also had wet tail and is now improving (after a month I might add) He is still a bit loose though and he weighs 72g one month post wet tail. He is still needing offered water and food frequently or else he tends to sleep through.

I see, well I suppose anything above 40g is an improvement!
So by the sounds of things even after Chomp has recovered I will occasionally have to offer him water and food?
It's a good job I decided to sign up here, i'd be hopeless trying to cure him without all you guys.
Both me and Chomp are extremely greatful.

When I got poorly Snicks he was around 40g too, he was supposed to be 7 weeks but looked more like a 5 week old. How confident would you be of his age?

Keeping an eye on his weight has been a big help, though it can make you over worry!

I think it depends on the individual hamster as to whether you'll have to keep offering him food. I've had to with Snicks as he has continuing mild diarrhoea, but I think if he didn't he would have been able to eat / drink enough by now.

It can be a bit of a roller-coaster ride, taking it day by day, but very much worth it. :)

I suppose I could pass him off as a couple weeks younger than they said.
And yes Souffle he sure is charging ahead (: already he's starting to pick at his food, he's coming out for drinks and wees more often outside of his igloo!
I'd like to pass this off as an improvement (:

My Little Mo (7 months old) weighs in at 174g - am I right in thinking that this is a good size considering she is a P@H hamster?

She seems huge and I have gradually noticed her growth - when I took her to the vets back in May, I remember her being about 150g. Would she be fully grown now do you think?

She is affectionaltely known as ratty :D

souffle

Kasala's last weigh in put her at 110g. Now, she went down to 106g when she had the pyo..came back up to 124g. Is 110g something to worry about, I mean, she is lively and bright eyed. Her weight hasn't dropped anymore..

As long as she is active and glossy and not looking boney and skinny I wouldn't worry too much. They grow till about 8 months we find. She may be a petite hamster in build. Fully grown though I would expect her to acheive at least 130g even if she is small. Keep up the good feeding and check her teeth are good and there are no other problems with her health.

Just weighed Nigey and he's about 140g (hard to tell on my cheapo scales!)

How does that sound?

He's about a year old (was an adoption so don't know exactly). Everyone who sees him says he looks massive, but I think that's partly because he's LH and partly because most of my friends are used to seeing young hamsters. Personally I think he's a little on the slim side. I think he's put on weight since I've had him (can't feel ribs so much) and have been bulking him up with eggfood and oats, but he still feels slim to me.

Obviously there's no normal weight for a hamster as there's s much variation between breeder hams and pet shop hams, but is there a way t tell healthy weight by looking/feeling (like the charts used for cats and dogs)?

My last syrian was a chunky female, and the one before got very ill in the last few months and had been underweight.

Weighed on 31-08-2010:

Messy = 44 grams
Runner = 47 grams

They are small! O.o

Weighed on 12-09-2010 (2 weeks later)

Messy = 45 grams
Runner = 56 grams (!?$#!?)

No treats permanently for Runner (except for very few veg)! Messy will be put into a ''treatbox'' every day so he can bulk up a bit: when they playfight now, it is not really fair. Runner just sits on Messy lol.

Weighed the syrians last night, will weigh the little ones when they next come out.

Bella: 242g
Daisy: 205g
Alan: 154g

Poor Alan is shrinking but he is getting old now. Still got bags on energy though. I think he wasn't fed much before we got him and so hasn't got a huge appetite.

EDIT: oops, just read through the thread, think mine need to go on a diet. Bella is pure muscle though I think.
