We'd finally confirmed that Whizz was lonely and wasn't going to be happy until she had a friend. We went out, saw the smallest ham in a tank and sexed it... With bits closer together than Whizz's, we were confident we were bringing home a female and we named her Muffin, short for Ragamuffin

Given that we were introducing an adult and a four month old, the introduction went a lot better than we expected and we soon had the two hams living together quite happily.

Unfortunately the pairing didn't last long, and in time Muffin started to frustrate and chase Whizz, with the two being separated when Whizz decided enough was enough and pulled out some of Muffin's chest fur. We tried a reintroduction and all seemed to be going well... Right until the hams met without a barrier between them and promptly formed a ball of fur and teeth, after which the separation became permanent.
Muffin settled down to life alone quite happily, particuarly enjoying the ham-cake celebrations where she posed for some very nice photographs

But... The adventures weren't over yet! Muffin gave us quite a surprise one day when we discovered a surprisingly yellow scent gland for a female... As this was followed by the appearance of testicles, we promptly realised that our little "she" was infact a he, and were very glad that he'd been apart from Whizz for much too long for us to need to worry that she may be pregnant.
Muffin quickly became our little "Mole-ham" with his own network of underground tunnels between all the important places in his cage... Like his food bowl

But he would play above-ground sometimes too

He also got engaged (http://www.hamstercentral.com/community/hamster-chat/29341-happy-event.html)... And wrote his bride-to-be a love letter (http://www.hamstercentral.com/community/hamster-chat/30688-dear-marmalade-love-muffin.html) (Unfortunately many of the pictures are no longer visible), where he gave her a cage tour...

And sent lots of whiskery kisses too

He loved to play with his toys

And dig, dig, dig! Muffin never quite got the point of humans... He wasn't afraid of us, but really didn't see any reason to find us interesting either. He was quite happy to let me get photos, and even ran over hands, but never did more than a quick walk over the hands before jumping off to go and play

Muffin had a happy life, mostly solitary but definetly happy. Now his time has come and he has passed, but I've no doubt that wherever he is, he's found or made a burrow to play in.
Rest in peace Muffin, our very own little Mole-ham
