Milo & Murphy

Last night after much consideration, I rescued these two beautiful hamsters from someone who "wanted rid of the things" because she was allergic to them. I was at my limit with hamsters really but I knew I could take them in temporarily to get them in a good size cage and then ensure they go to a good home.

Unfortunately after having them here for the last 24 hours, I have established that Murphy is poorly. I suspect his scent gland is blocked, and also due to his excessive drinking and peeing, I suspect he has either diabetes or a UTI. For that reason, they will be staying with me until I can find out what is wrong with him and get him treated.

You can see from the pictures, that although I am assuming they are hybrids as they were purchased from a pet store, that they appear to carry very strong Campbell genes. I am told they are around 13 weeks old now.

Meet Milo - the smaller of the two and definitely a cheeky little chap! He loves to climb on anything he can, including his brother!! And is very friendly with me, walking on to my hand in his cage and coming out for cuddles.

And Murphy – the bigger of the two boys. Not as active as Milo and a little unsure of me at the moment. But given that I believe him to be poorly with a couple of things, I imagine he just feels pretty rough and the move here will have been enough for him to deal with right now. He still posed for a few photos for you all though.

A cute pair of charmers, aren't they? Can't believe someone would want to "get rid of them" like they're trash! I'm allergic to cats, but I still rescue them when they need homes (as Tuppence and her three kittens can attest.)!

I suspect now that the reason she "wanted rid" is because one is clearly poorly! But who knows.
What matters now is trying to help Murphy get better or more comfortable at least and that is something that I will do my very best at for him

They really are so cute. I truely hate it when people "get rid of" any animal. So many treat animals as disposable. I hope that with his diet monitored Murphy can start feeling better. I may be getting a pair of dwarf hammies and I've been learning all I can about them, especially the medical part that comes along with hybrids. I had a pair a couple of years ago and had no problems with them. But most of my experience has been with Syrians. I don't know yet what I'll come home with since I'll be going to a rescue for them and I don't now what they have right now. Whatever they have, I'll be coming home with several someones :-D

Murphy must be feeling so poorly at the moment as he is not keen on being handled and has started squeaking in his sleep, it's so sad to hear. He's very slow on his feet despite being so so young still. I know for sure he has diabetes now he's been tested, and suspect his scent gland is blocked, so we are off to the exotic vets this morning to see what he says. Then I need to decide what is best for these boys long term as they were never going to be staying with me (unfortunately) , but I do have an idea/offer in the pipeline :)

It does make me wonder whether she noticed he was sick and therefore wanted to get rid of them. I mean, its clear to see he isn't very well, so I would be surprised if she hadn't noticed!

BUT - on a positive note, they are with me now and I am doing my best for them :)
They both saw the vet this morning who cleaned Murphy's scent gland and confimed he has diabetes. Advised me to manage his diet etc and monitor him.

Milo was a little over friendly and sat in the vets shirt pocket ;) The vet checked him over and said he looks very healthy and has a lovely shine to his coat. I did mention to the vet that I was not keeping the boys and my plan is to rehome and his comments were " You must be mad letting these two friendly cuddly boys go!!" ;) :lol:

I have a little update on these two gorgeous boys (well quite big update actually)...I got chatting to Vectis about what diet to put Murphy on as he is diabetic and to keep the story short, Vectis kindly offered to take in Murphy and Milo for me. I was never going to keep these boys long term and now Murphy needs a special diet, I was always going to be picky on who I would be happy to rehome them with when the time came. So although I thought they would be with me a little longer than this, when Vectis offered, I knew I had to give the offer some serious thought. I know that with her knowledge and experience with diabetic hams, that they would be getting the best care possible and therefore I decided that this was meant to be :)

Milo & Murphy (& myself) will be going to the Coventry show next weekend, where the boys will then go home with Vectis. I have become very attached to these fluffy boys in the short time I have had them and I will certainly be making the most of the next 7 days I have with them.

Of course! To be honest, I really admire those of you who rescue and foster. I don't think I would ever be able to do it because of how attached I would get. Even if I knew letting them move on to somewhere else was best for them, I just don't think I could handle it. So for real, I think you're amazing for doing it. xx

My boys are off to their new home tomorrow with Vectis, so I have been spending lots of time with them this week and they will get lots and lots of extra cuddles tonight. I will miss them very much.

This is where I hijack the thread (with Nikkigrace's permission ;) ). I hamnapped this handsome pair today - and yes they are that fluffy in real life! They tried out the life of a show hamster by spending the afternoon in a spare show pen as a water bottle attaches more easily to that than a normal carrier (we preferred Murphy to have access to plenty of water rather than just cucumber for as long as possible). The bottle had to come off for the journey 'down south' so the boys didn't have an impromptu bath! Milo was unphased but I don't think Murphy envies the show crew spending the day in a hall and travelling about. The lads have settled into their new bachelor pad and they're busy rearranging it to their own taste (ie making a mess!).
