I am not sure about Harry Hamster, but i buy a 15kg bag of Burgess Supa Hamster for around £10 - which is quite cheap as all of the other shops i have been into charge around £1 a Kg so these can be over £15!

I buy the small bags as and when I need them. My previous hamster ate the Burgess mix (the one in the yellow bag) and I intend to give Pippin Harry Hamster mix, but as she was a spontaneous purchase in Pets at Home I bought a bag of their own hamster muesli at the same time and I can't see it running out any time soon. I see no need for buying in bulk for just a hamster or two.

I buy the 1kg bags of Harry Hamster and the price varies between £1 - £1.89 depending on where I'm buying them. I paid £1.29 at Wilkinsons last week which was a pretty good price for it.

The RRP for 15kg Harry is £23.99, 15kg Burgess Supa Hamster £13.49 and 16kg Wagg Hamster & Gerbil Munch £9.50.

So Harry is much more expensive. Having said that I still buy it for my Syrians as I feel it is the best and less gets wasted. Older hams who don't need the higher protein content of Harry get Wagg mixed in with theirs.
Mark prefers Burgess for the dwarfs.

Wilkos still have the 1kg bags of Harry at £1.29 which does actually make it cheaper than the large bag. Some shops have gone on to the 750g bags at loads more (Sainsburys is £1.79!) I guess it depends on convenience too. (souffle imagines BVH coming out of Wilkos with 2 trolleys piled high with small bags of Harry  )

I seem to buy a harry hamster small bag every few weeks though since I've has more hamsters I got three bags in, they were the last ones in the shop and the first ones ever there. I felt a bit greedy, but I have to order mine off line sometimes.

I was first introduced to Burgess Supa Hamster from a breeder a few years ago who i got some Roborovskis from. She said it was the best food to feed Roborovskis on, especially pregnant females and for when they are feeding their young too - apparantly, there is no yeast in it, as in other hamster foods, which can be harmful yo pregnant and nursing Roborovskis.

I am not sure if that is true or not, i completely believed her when she first told me and was that worried about it that i threw out all my other food  (even though i had never had problems before that :? )

Anyway, i have used it ever since then and al of my hamsters love it and the only bits they leave are the small brown pellet type things - which i have noticed they do with every hamster food i have tried them on!

As it is not over expensive and not too cheap and nasty either, :) i prefer to use it :D

It works great for me and doesnt cost me too much either, especially when i buy in bulk - which also helps out when i give bags of it to new owners.

oh that's interesting, i haven't heard anything about yeast before. The bag i had, the food was flourescent, which made me assume it had lots of artificial colours in. It was like day-glow food!

It's pain to buy lots of small bags now that we have lots of hams but, as souffle says, unless you can find very cheap HH in a 15kg bag, it's cheaper to buy 15 x 1kg bags from Wilko's (£19.35, I believe, though I'm rubbish at maths).

Do you get much wastage in the 15kg bags? Bits crushed to dust in the bottom, I mean?

Tammy22
