So I finally took the dive and summed up some money to purchase the Detolf cabinet from Ikea. I excited brought everything home, and didn't expect it would take me four days to furnish the thing (I do have to work and sleep). BUT FINALLY! Its nearly done; I just need to built The Professors house in the large amount of bedding and I'm waiting on a second water bottle in the mail. Till then she has three other places to snooze in. Granted; she's been sleeping the wheel ever since I placed her in there (And the minute she wakes up from sleeping or napping she goes back to running on it).

But anywho, here are pictures :D I'm quite proud. I also want to hear some suggestions if possible.

Oh also i'm really curious to the different types of substrate you are using and where you get them from :) I thin one looks like megazorb, one is obviously sand but curious as to what kind. Not sure what the others are xD

Hello, are you keeping a Syrian or a dwarf in there?

Nevermind, I just saw the small Wodent Wheel Junior so it must be a dwarf. =)

The bedding I'm using are aspen, paper balled bedding, coconut husk for the dirt, and I found reptile sand that was sudible for hamsters. And the hamster inside is actually a Syrian hamster. I had the wheel for pass dwarf and planned on switching, but she hasn't out grown the 8 inch wheel yet. She still runs with a straight back an without any difficulty. I'll list the products in its fullest when I get back home. Current at work posting this.

Looks great! :D I love the sections of different substrate and the popsicle stick platform. Maybe you can add some wood or cork bark if you like those, and there's also some interesting looking rock caves that will fit syrians from the reptile section. :)

Cork and wood stuffs are the next thing on my list when I get paid again.

Okay, here we go;

Petco's Aspen Bedding
Kaytee's Soft Granule Pet Bedding
Coconut Husk from Eco Earth
Repti-Sand (Got this hint from another thread from this forum)

I picked everything up from Petco.

I am so in love with Kaytees Soft Granule bedding. If only it was cheaper for the amount I'd only get it for all my hams. I haven't gotten coconut husk because I hear it molds quickly. I considered it for my gerbils for a time but was worried I'd have to change it out more than once a month.

Omg, I used the Soft Granule for my rats in the past and it was HEAVEN. Since I work at the store I get a bit of a discount. I've heard about the coconut husk molding, and I've seen it happen in some of the reptile tanks (But I can only assume the wet food also helps out with the molding since its always been around wet turtle or water dragon kibble) but if it happens I'll just change it to all Kaytee or move some stuff over so its two parts aspen. No problem. X3

I am. Normal ol' wood and wire type lid.

Wow your cage looks amazing! I love the different sections. I am starting to spend hours thinking about my dream cage and it is definitely on the detolf scale. Well done! I saw some of those reptile caves yesterday in a pet shop. They are so great and have multiple exits, but v expensive.

I might end up purchasing a reptile cave for the dirt area and move the wheel over to sand. My hamster has made a point that she WILL run on her wheel with full cheeks, and eat her food while still in the wheel when ever she pleases. That way I can just scoop the leftover food out.. lil bugger.

wow! very cool! i love all the different compartments =) i like how its becoming more mainstream for ppl to build cages rather than buy a pre-built cage. it means you can be more creative and make the cage as big as you like =) x

As much as I want a detolf I'm thinking it's going to be one hell of a nightmare to clean out!

As much as I want a detolf I'm thinking it's going to be one hell of a nightmare to clean out!

Cleaning it isn't really that bad. My hamster has already started to just going in the sand (noted, I did do some slow changes over the weeks ever since getting the detolf) and I do spot cleans every night before bed. I'm shocked that it doesn't smell like hamster yet and I haven't even done a full clean yet.
