Goodbye dear Mr Herbie. I have known that you were leaving me for a while now. Your body was failing but your little spirit soldiered on.
It was love at first sight when we first saw your furry cuteness lying on top of your brother at Pets @ Home in Raynes Park on September 30th 2010. We bought you to celebrate my getting a job and you were our first ever pet together and first hamster in over a decade.
You were the quirky one right from the start: we used to get up in the morning and find that you had spent the night industriously stuffing your tubes with wood shavings so as to block yourself off from food and water! You had a one-hamster war against your mushroom house when you grew too big to fit inside it: I used to watch your many and varied attempts to knock it over! You were just a little bit strange and I loved you for it.
Mr Herbie, you were always so gentle and docile. I will miss how delicately you accepted all treats and the dismissive way you dropped anything that was not quite good enough! I will miss your endless dedication to crafting the perfect nest and your utter joy whenever you discovered fresh toilet roll in your cage. I will miss having you sit in the crook of my arm while I watched TV and you groomed yourself. I will miss having to remove all the wood shavings from your lovely long skirt every time you came out of the cage. I will miss your twitchy, tickly whiskers and the way you sniffed loudly through the bars when there was a new smell around. I will even miss your incessant gnawing on your water bottle every evening when I got into bed: you knew exactly when I was going to sleep!
I hope you sleep well, Mr Herbie. You were so tired at the end, you were not yourself anymore. Thank you for being the most wonderful little hamster friend anyone could wish for.
I love you and miss you already xxx

Although not too impressed with your new hamster heaven!

Older now, back in your 'round room' and enjoying nom noms in your nest (next to your mushroom that you so abused!).
