I chose the Alexander cage for my very active young Syrian longhair,Humphrey(call him Hum or Mouse!) and it's made him so happy.I read the housing forums here before I got it,and to anyone choosing a cage,do consider it as it's so spacious and versatile, and beautifully made, with max space for running, playing and exercising.
It easily fits a big wheel, and Hum loves using his Wonderland Bogie Wheel 20cm diameter, which is another thing I can hugely recommend,it's ideal for a Syrian longhair,20cm is an ideal size and the wood is very smooth for his feet, and it spins very quietly.Hum wouldn't use a wheel before this one.
I got Hum free from a student who had him 6 months in a small basic Savic cage approx 37x54cm with just one small balcony. He was very bored and never used the too small wheel (6cm diam)and did lots of bar chewing and searching for ways out.
When I got the Alexander, approx 97x48cm,with its many safe upper levels, nice wide ramp with non-slip treads, and 3 amazing houses to sleep or play in,he was so content. It was such a big cage I fitted his old Savic base in,as it had a good water-holder and a house area, which he now actually has designated as his loo! Having the familiar old cage base helped him settle in to the new cage well as it must have smelled nice to him.
The security of the Alexander is excellent. The cage has one large top door and 2 side doors.I normally use the top door.
As a relatively inexperienced owner I know I was very grateful to read reviews of cages,to help me find the best, and I can say that from the hamster welfare point of view this is one of the best.It isn't a shiny exciting-looking cage but it's a quality cage with masses of freedom and happiness for your hamster.I think if Hum could decide,he'd choose the Alexander himself!

Thanx for nice comments Leesha, sorry Hum wasn't in the pics..he was fast asleep in his nest, exhausted from rushing about probably!
I am attaching some pics of Hum when I first got him (in his tiny cage then) with my Burmese cat Henry, who was my reason for getting Hum..Henry was pining so much for his companion cat who died a month before I by chance found Hum.And Hum has cheered him up alot.
I knew Henry wouldn't accept a new cat,but he was glad to have some animal life around.
I did wonder how it would go,and at first Henry gave a growl when Hum came out, then he was fascinated, and so was I, as Hum showed off to him, climbing upside down, swinging on his rope.
He wasn't a bit bothered by Henry. In fact although I'd never trust Henry to have access to Hum,I think they quite like each other.
The Alexander's bars are narrow enough to protect from a straying claw, though Henry hasn't tried that.

Hi Susie You won't be disappointed with the Alexander cage,it's amazingly spacious and very safe.Hum loves it.
He stopped bar chewing completely after he moved in.You can set it up and use it in various ways,it's got 2 beautifully made separate houses with it,and I've set mine up to give 3 levels.
The base is big and I put the base of Hum's old cage into the Alexander base for a familiar smell. It's still in there and provides another extra compartment for him to run in and out of.
A hamster can do alot of running about in the Alexander.I also got a Karlie Wonderland bogie wheel (smooth wood) 8",which Hum loved..he never ever got into his previous wheel which was too small I think.
Even tho it's a huge cage,I still like to take Hum out every eve..he lets himself be picked up for a cuddle, and then a big run around my bedroom (have to watch the little monkey all the time or he tries to take up the carpet and find a hole in the floorboards!)or a play in his old cage-top,I use things like Pringle tubes and mince pie boxes to make it interesting!
Good luck with your cage,I bought mine online from Zooplus, think I paid around £72.You may be lucky and find a cheaper one or a used one,but it's well worth the money.

How lovely to be setting up your new cage on Xmas Day..enjoy! Sorry I haven't any more pics but did you see my pics of my cage posted in October? It's v easy to set up but be careful of the plastic holders each side of tray,I snapped one when setting up,but it doesn't affect the security.

Hi guys,
I am planning to buy a good cage for a post Christmas hamster present and it looks like the Alexander is a good idea. My question is can it fit a good wheel in? The problem I have with my current cage (an old Rody Trio) is that it can't fit my 8.5" Silent Spinner without it not working properly - the bottom of the silent spinner rubs against the side of the plastic bin it's based on causing the wheel to slow down every time my little Ducky uses it. As a result of this she hardly ever uses her wheel which means she doesn't get any exercise done!!
Anyway, could anyone owning the Alexander cage give me a rough idea of whether it would fit or not?
Thanks!

I've got 12 inch wheels in both of mine no problem. They're fab cages :)

Thanks for the quick reply. However now I've looked into the Savic Hamster Heaven and am pretty sure I'll buy that instead. What do you think?

There are lots of good reviews for it in this section. The one thing I'd suggest is maybe blocking up the penthouse bit as it's not very well ventilated and if you're still getting to know your hamster you don't want them hiding up there all the time

Hi Hope u all had a good Xmas..and hope Knotty was pleased with the Alexander,u said u were setting it up on Xmas Day! I'd quite like to be snuggled up in an Alexander in this weather..I guess our hams have a pretty good life.
Re keeping hams warm in winter....I expect most people have nice modern warm places, but I live in an old cottage which can be slightly draughty, even with dbl glazing,so I have Hum's cage next to a radiator, his bedroom is alongside, and I insulate the base of the cage with honeycomb blanket around the outside of the base.As the central heating is off all night I have a small Bambino oil radiator close up to Hum's bedroom, which I put on a low setting,2,that way he's just right. You can tell if they're warm enough by feeling their paws when you lift them out! Now Hum's always nice and warm.I always have plenty of soft bedding so he can make a really warm nest. That fluffy stuff seems really good. I also put a blanket across one side of the cage for extra warmth.I leave the room's curtains open at night so the little man can see what he's doing! My relatives said he looks much better now than when I first got him.Must post a pic soon,he's so cute..he has developed a lovely coat now(he's a longhair).

I saw this cage review and many others on the alexander cage and i really like it, I'm planning on getting a Syrian hamster after my 3 dwarf hamsters now and i am thinking about getting this cage, my only question is that can you move the different levels to different heights in the cage or do they have to be one height only?

You can move the two end shelves up and down - they can sit on any level that has bars. While they're a bit stiff to move up and down, they do just sit on the bars (no glue, screws etc.) so you can move them as often as you like.

There is also a shelf which bridges the gap between the two - totally optional whether or not you want to use it, but if you do then it does mean that realistically the two end shelves have to be at the same height.

I've ordered the Alexander cage for my Syrian and it should be here tomorrow or the next day and I'm honestly so excited. I've wanted one for so long but put it off as my hamsters current cage was ok.
Reading this has made me look forward to it even more so.
Can't wait to set it up and put her in it :)

Thanks to all the helpful reviews and guidance we selected an Alexander cage for our hamster, Milku, and haven't regretted the choice.

I've uploaded some photos of it to show that it's a great roomy cage.

We have posted a more detailed review on line, but I can't quite get the link added here. It's on:
