Just found the following below on a now defunct Hamster Society website:

alfalfa, almond pits, alocasia, amaryllis, apple seeds, arrow grass, avocado, azalea, autumn crocus

Now look at the list of ingredients on the side of the packet and you guessed it number 2 is alfalfa.

What are they trying to do ? Poison our little furry friends.

Perhaps this is why the hams won't eat the black bits in the meal?

And who is going to inform the manufacturers that one of their ingredients in their food is toxic to hamsters? Perhaps we all ought to send email or use the contact form and get in touch with Supreme Petfoods and then maybe they'll remove the offending ingredient.

i think alfalfa is only bad when it's fresh, i wouldnt bet my life on it though.

I thought alfafa was ok, and people have been using this food successfuly for years. Not 100% sure though.

I have checked in several places and all have stated it is safe for hamsters. I don't think that so many hamsters would survive to ripe old age whilst eating it if it was toxic. Surely there would have been some realisation before now that something was not suitable. I will continue to use Harry happily as it seems to suit our hamsters who have by and large lived long and healthy lives. Some eat the pellets some don't.

The alfalfa pet owners feed to their hamsters is dried, and so it's fine; the stuff in Harry Hamster mix included.

My Chinese hammies eat everything else, and leave the alfalfa in a big, unwanted heap :lol: :lol:
