Would this be big enough to use as a bin cage either for a hamster or 3 gerbils?

SAMLA Bin with lid - IKEA (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50169548/?query=samla+bin)

I know it's plastic, but their in a zoozone 2 and they have never attempted to chew out of it.

I think that's the box a lot of people here recommend for bin cages :)

I use the standard rectangular Samla and they are huge! both my Syrians are living in them (one each obviously), and have plenty of space. I think both these Samlas have the same/very similar specifications so I don't see why not?

SAMLA Box - transparent, 57x39x28 cm/45 l - IKEA (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/30102974/#/90102971)

I've been wanting to try that bin for a while, just don't have the space for it!

The transparency is what appeals to me, it looks in the picture anyway, really see through compare to other bins. I also like the slope side which makes for easy access, it puts me in mind of one of these:

But for a fraction of the price! And you can order it online!!:D

Hmm might have a think on that for the gerbs.

I personally think it'd be better for gerbils than hams, as the actual floorspace isn't as big as the specifications, so you'd have to fill it up with a lot of substrate for the floorspace to be near the specifications, and gerbils are more burrow-y. (That said, I don't know much about gerbils )

It`s a decent size but I wouldn`t use a BIN type cage unless I knew I could mesh the front and the lid. I don`t feel transparency is enough. I like a cage to be more open for ventilation, so as long as the BIN was meshed to a good, safe standard, I would go with a second hand Zoozone 2!!

Random question - why do you capitalise 'bin' RH? Does bin stand for something? I've found it odd that they're called 'bin cages' rather than box or storage box, or stacker box cages.

Sorry, slight pre-coffee randomness for you :p

I use the term BIN cage because they used to be called BIN`s! There was a tutorial on here not that long ago that showed "how to make a BIN cage"... I think it was before the website changed hands? I still have the print out of it somewhere. The name has probably changed to storage box cage or plastic storage box cage, but they were always referred to as BIN cages. Don`t ask me why though!

Yeah, I know they're called bin cages, but why do you capitalise 'bin' when it doesn't stand for anything?

Not sure. I may have seen it used in caps so just do the same. It doesn`t stand for anything as far as I know. Maybe because it`s a Bin style storage? Using BIN in caps just emphasises the name I guess.
