I thought i'd do a thread on how my oh built an insulated room for the hamsters inside our large shed:) It was quite straight forward and didnt take him long to do. The ceiling above the room has a double layer of loft instlation, the walls are boarded out with plywood and inbetween them is polystyrene, the windows into the room are meshed with rodent proof mesh, at the moment they are covered with a double layer of bubble wrap to keep in the heat and at night into the window frames i slot in polystyrene sheeting.
Its heated with a 120w heating tube which is thermostatically controlled.

the room has been used for 2yrs now with no problem, even during two really bad winters the hamsters were all fine:)...here are a few pics. ETA the room has a natural source of daylight through the large shed window.

thats great :D When I move we will have a hamster room, or shed, Ild rather a room for central heating and I can check on them more easily as Im a paranoid hammy mummy!

Im sure they love running about on the floor in there :D looks very secure! :D

Lucky hamsters, the room looks fantastic, nice and quiet during the day for them!. I had a converted shed for my rabbits and guinea pigs with a fenced in garden, kept them out of draughts and gave them a large play area. There's a video on you tube of a women who had converted a room in her house for her guinea pigs, she did a good job too and like you put a lot of thought and effort in to it. I'm sure your hamsters are very happy.

oh wow so are they allowed to free-roam?! bet they love that haha. I'd be too worried about my ham escaping, even with all the rodent-proofing!

thanks everyone:). Yes the hammies do love their free-roaming time, they each take a turn and the last one out gets to stay out till morning...and as yet non have even tried to gnaw their way out:D...that may be because they cant get a purchase on the smooth skirting boards.. i dont know? , so im never worried about them escaping, the only thing i am paranoid about is one of them getting out of their cage when another is loose in the shed:shock:...i must double check their cages a thousand times to ensure ive closed all the doors properly lol

Wow, that looks amazing! I'd be worried about letting them run around throughout the night, i'd be constantly worrying what they're up to. And yeah if another hamster escapes (remember it only takes a bored hamster to gnaw a bit to get a good grip!) then it could get serious :S

That looks great. I've so many cages in my front room that I can hardly get in there or have much furniture in either.
