Samber, my chinchilla, just gave birth! I don't know what color, what sex, or how much it weighs, all I know is that there is one! I feel bad, I'm out of town and my poor pet sitter is home with her. Hopefully she has the placenta soon so I can stop panicking.

This is Baby#1 who is a male ebony (not sure what kind of ebony yet) and is a good 61 grams. He has a white tail.

Baby #2 is also a male ebony, but a different kind. (I just don't know what! It's normally difficult to tell) He weighed in at 52 grams. He has a black tail.

I also wanted to point out that I had them out for only two-three minutes at a time and I only took them out because Momma was eating at the time. :D

Poppa hates people. All people. Me especially 'cause I like to bug him :mad: He tried to spray and attempts to bite, it's rather funny actually! Oscar hates me more though :P

You can start handling them as soon as mom's done cleaning them. They aren't like hamsters in that aspect. I don't like taking them away from mom unless they aren't eating though. They can't come out for playtime until they are six months old though, nor can they have treats :(

That's her earring :) When you show chinchillas in Sanctioned shows you tab them so that if they get loose you can catch them, and if you sell them they'll have your identification. Most of mine have them, Maia did, but her got all funny and I took it out, now she had a hole in her ear :)

I was gonna ask the exact same question...So can they be considered a good tool if your animal ever gets lost? Like, is the number/letter combination on it completely unique? Is their a computerised registry?

I'm not sure it's computerised. It's not known by rescues really, just breeders. It has your ranch brand and their number. Their number is the letter of the year (This year is B, last year was A, next year is C and so on) and what baby they were. the first baby born in the year is B1, then B2, then B3... So yes it is unique.

I'm going to the vets in a little over an hour. This vet knows a bit about exotics, and I think that with her and my knowledge combined we'll be able to get Samber better.

She has a really bad Urinary Tract Infection. She had to be put on baytril for 5 days. Thus I have to pull the kits and handfeed them. Just about everything I didn't want to happen. I fed them a bit ago, the big one ate like a champ. The little one wouldn't eat, I got about .3 ccs in him.

Ouch, hopefully the little one will start to take from you and Samber will soon perk up :( I know nothing of rearing chin's but i know for some other rodents you can stroke mum with a muslin cloth, and use it to wrap baby in during feeding, sometimes it helps ?

I've given them tentative names. Timon and Pumba. :) Pumba is eating *pretty* well, while Timon isn't eating very well at all. I've bumped up their feedings to every hour to every hour and a half now.

So I've now made a rambly post to let you guys know that they ate .5 mL at their 1 AM feeding. Not happily, but they ate it. I'm going to try to get some fresh goats milk this afternoon. *yawn* Must. Sorry for the lack of updates, they are doing amazing. Big one is 79 grams and little one is 71 grams. Couldn't be better. Momma is battling bloat, but seems to be doing better. She and I had a talk, after today she is not allowed to get any sicker. I might just curl up and die if she does.

Well today Fauna had a baby. She decided not to go the traditional route. My dad went down to the basement and the dogs went into the chin room and started smelling something in the middle of the floor (:O). He moved the aside and saw a baby, he freaked, put it on a heat pad and came and got me from school. I gave it a few drops of milk but he has clicking noises in his lungs, so chances are it has fluid in them. His eyes aren't open, he can't support himself, and he barely tips the scales at 30 grams. Momma hasn't rejected him but I think she is just indifferent about his survival. He can't nurse, as he can't see, and he can't eat too much from me due to the fluid in his lungs. Momma doesn't sit still and she has nearly squooshed him on multiple occasions. I'd give him a 20% chance. I almost wonder if I shouldn't feed him and just let him pass on his own rather than prolonging his journey to the bridge. I just can't stand doing nothing. He's currently trying to nurse of Fauna's back, I wish I could reach him and show him where the nipple is but Fauna won't let me.

I'm going to go feed and go to bed, its been a long day.

Sorry I haven't updated. Fauna's baby died on Tuesday, he fought. Hard. He was just too far gone.

On Friday baby 2 got diarrhea, I've been trying to cure it but nothing has helped. I'd say that unless he gets miraculously better today, he'll pass within 2 days.
