Can Hamsters sense when a storm is comin?

My 2 hammies were nuts last night! biting their cages and just going wild running around in their cages...Romeo was even haging off the top of his cage monkey bar style! :shock: I took them out of their cages and let them run in the ball for 15mins just to get some of their energy burned off



or are they trying to tell me to get going and make them bigger cages NOW rather than next month?? :cry:

I do think they are quite sensitive to changes in the weather and in particular seasons.

Alfie was very active in his cage shortly before the thunder & lightning we had here earlier - there's a palpable air pressure even we can feel, the hamsters must feel it too.

They certainly can sense storms, as most animals do, because I certainly can! Up to 24hrs before a storm, or even just hours before it rains I get the worst headaches. :roll: It was quite a nuisance when I lived back home (UK) as it rains a lot there of course, but now I'm in Texas I don't get them as often as its so hot and dry here. However, when it DOES rain or a big ole Texas size storm is on its way Urrrgghhh! It HURTS! The only thing I can do is lie down, no pain killers work. As soon as it passes the headache goes.

It can be bought on by two things - either right before the rain because of the increased positive ions in the air, and / or the pressure drop. Sometimes I'll get the headache without any rain, but a storm may be around with a fast drop in barometric pressure and that's enough to do it. One thing did work back home and that was a simple ionizer. However, here in the States it's hard to find JUST an ionizer without all the air purifiers and filters etc! The "Ionic Breeze" would work, (a large and expensive US air purifier / ionizer) but I don't need all of that stuff - I just want the little iddy biddy $20 ionizer!!! They put back the negative ions in the air.

Then again, it's kinda cool cause I'm very often way more accurate than the weather man! My neighbours love it!! "Should I wash my car now or is it going to rain? " :lol: LOL!

So - back to the subject - You BET our hammies can sense the weather! :D

I actually have an ionizer like the one you describe as I have terrible allergies and still sneeze like mad when changing the enclosures - sadly it was not enough to cope with Chinchillas - I get an annual anti-histamine injection also which has made a difference combined with this amazing little triangular device - I find the negative ion shower really does help as I too get really bad tension headaches when a storm is brewing.

yes my old ionizer was triangular shaped too! Probably the same one.

Sorry to hear about the allergies. I ended up getting allergic to my old cat but it didn't stop me from hugging her LOL! My eyes would just stream..... LOL.

Coco1, THANKS SO MUCH for the info on the ionizer! I get migraine headaches the same way you do. The air pressure is murder on me. Summer time is better, but the winter and the storms that happen often, I can just die. Matt gets his weather report in the mornings when I wake with a headache. Most times I'm right!



That darn ioinic breeze is too expensive! Can anyone send me more information on the ones you guys are talking about from the UK? Is there a place to buy on line? Here is my email for sending me info. I would soooo appreciate it.

:cry: oh that is too bad that you all suffer such when it is going to storm...I know what I feel like when i get my killer migraines but those are from when I have my back out of alignment.....

afish - I've checked into it and have found nothing regarding just small ionizers. I wish I could have bought mine with me from the UK but it wouldn't work here on our electric current. The closest i've found to them, and I don't know if they would work as well or not, are those little ones that you can buy to install in the water fountains that make the mist. Thats an ionizer that does that, but like I say, I don't know if it would work as well?

I got mine from QVC UK :oops: a few years back now. They used to do a huge range of them. A water feature in you room can help promote the same atmosphere certainly.



I have heard of animals with sore heads before - toothache, injury etc can all give animals a pain in the cranium - you will often see a cow rubbing his head along the fence or the ground and the farmer advised me this can mean they have a sore head...

He said they were doing that in an effort to release the pressure - you can see bull's go really mad - hence the expression a bull with a sore head I suppose :wink: :lol: I am sure he wasn't winding me up :oops:
