o.O How do people make shelves for super tall cages or bird cages they are converting into a hamster cage? What kinds of things can be used to put stuff together? Like.. glue.. or paint. or whatever? What is toxic and what is not?

Non-toxic glue is often labelled as such, so thats the glue we got for hamster-related stuff.
For paint I believe most use plastikote, but I'm not sure if all forms are ok.

the plasti-kote enamel paint specifies safe for children's toys, so that's what i'm going to be using...

To put the shelves in i would use nuts,bolts and screws! If i was going to glue anything in i would use non-toxic glue and if i was going to paint anythting i would use plastikote!

If you have a barred cage you can easily buy chinchilla shelves with the fixings from eBay. This sort of thing:

The rule is anything suitable for childrens toys is suitable for hamsters, varnishes that are meant for childrens toys are usually used to varnish hamster shelves :)

I'd screw the shelf into the cage, wouldn't rely on glue.. but most people just use normal PVA :)

In Pets at home there are smaller shelves available for hamsters, they have a screw type bolt thing that fits to bars.
