My new hamster Algy is proving quite hard to tame mostly on account of him sleeping 20 out of 24 hours. Is this normal? When he does come out he seems perfectly healthy.

He is a male that I got from Pets@home and he is definitely much smaller than Kretchers when I got her so I am wondering whether he is very young too.

Is it best to leave him until he wakes up of his own accord be that for 10 minutes every night. :?

Babies do sleep quite a lot and he is likely up on and off all day and night. Being small he will need to eat frequently and as he is new he will take time to settle in to a routine. Keep a close eye on him for any signs of looseness as sometimes a home change can cause this due to stress. Once you are sure he is fit I would teach him to get up when you want him but only bring him out for short periods so as not to tire him. He may be young though they are meant to be a least 6 weeks for P@H. We have an atricle called 'Taming Tips' in the article section which may be of help.

Thanks. I have been keeping an eye on him for loose stools but he seems absolutely fine, just so sleepy. His food is disappearing so at least he is eating and I have been able to handle him although he is not tame yet.
