can these be used attached to a wire cage instead of on the stand? Also what size for a Syrian hamster, my hammy is not that big really, about six inches long at a guess.

Nope, they don't come off their stand, but if the hamster decides to move it you could always use a cable tie to attach the stand to the side of the cage. I have the 8" (I think) one and it's fine for my syrian :) They're great, lovely and quiet too :D
