I decided to take pictures of young Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamsters (30 days) to help everyone because sexing adults is more easier...

This is the Male

They are great pictures Alberto - I hope you don't mind but I would like to make this a "Sticky" so it is always readily available to people visiting the Breeding Section.

Excellent pics which I'm sure will help people who are unsure. How do you get such a good grip on those little wrigglers?!!!!

I've been trying to determine the gender of my dwarf, it's still not very tame and likes to squirm around when I look under it's belly. I DEFINITELY noticed one hole, I put emphasis on the definitely because it was very hard to miss.. I also read that on the females the holes almost look like one because they are so close together. But there's something I noticed on the picture of the male, the fur on it's stomach makes sort of a line that leads to the other hole.. my hamster appears to have this, but I couldn't tell if there was a hole or not because it likes to squirm about. Anyone have any advice or suggestions? D:

Can you put him/her in a glass and look up from the bottom?

Is it only male dwarves that have the large scent gland at the centre of the stomach? :)

I believe so, yes. Though when I say 'I believe so', I mean I just turned poor Maggie upside down to have a look, and I can't see one. ;) (See got a sunflower seed for her assistance in scientific investigation, don't worry!)

Do you have a pedigree for them so you can be sure they aren't hybrids?

savannahgirlx

Yes I have their certificates and they are pure winter whites not hybrids x

That's good:) There's a whole breeding section here that might be very helpful for you if you want to have a read through. Good luck!

Thanks yes I wouldn't buy ANY hamster without a certificate especially a Winter White as it could be a Cambells or a hybrid

Er... If they've got pedigrees won't the breeder have confirmed what genders they are? Our breeder hams've always been correctly sexed before they were sold

Yes we have got 2 females but I am breeding them myself as whe I am breeding them there will be no hamster shows.

I think Kyrillion wondered why you were worried about sexing them if the pedigree certificate has their gender on. I'm guessing you mean sexing the babies afterwards!
